James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is the most-watched superhero film on HBO Max, surpassing Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984.
More superhero fans viewed James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad on HBO Max than either Wonder Woman 1984 or Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
As reported by Screen Rant, a new report by viewing analytics organization Samba TV found that The Suicide Squad garnered a viewership of 4.7 million US households during the first three weekends of its release on HBO Max. In comparison, Wonder Woman 1984 registered 3.9 million views and Zack Snyder’s Justice League earned a viewership of 3.2 million during their opening weekends on the platform.
While The Suicide Squad‘s numbers make it the most-watched DC film on the streaming service, the superhero film failed to surpass Mortal Kombat (5.5 million views) and Godzilla vs Kong (5.1 million views).
The HBO Max record isn’t the only one that Gunn’s soft reboot/sequel has broken so far. For example, it set a box office record on its opening night, earning $4.1 million, and it is now the highest-earning pandemic-era R-rated movie. However, despite the film’s initial successes, some have speculated that it will ultimately be a financial failure because it suffered an 81% drop in box office numbers during its second weekend.
There is still time to see The Suicide Squad in theaters before it leaves on Sept. 5. Gunn and the movie’s cast will also be hosting an HBO Max The Suicide Squad watch party on Twitter on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. PST and 9 p.m. EST.
