Netflix revealed the first look at its live-action adaptation of The School for Good and Evil.

Netflix offered a brief glimpse at the film adaptation in its preview for the films set to be released on the streaming service throughout 2022. One of the clips featured stars Kerry Washington and Charlize Theron in their full costumes, who will portray Professor Dovey and Lady Lesso, respectively.

The School for Good and Evil added five new cast members as of November 2021, with Ben Kingsley, Patti LuPone, Rob Delaney, Rachel Bloom and Mark Heap joining the fantasy film’s star-studded cast. Other cast members, besides Washington and Theron, include Sofia Wylie, Sophia Anne Caruso, Jamie Flatters, Kit Young, Michelle Yeoh and Laurence Fishburne.

From a screenplay co-written by David Magee and Laura Solon, the film is a live-action adaptation of the first novel from The School for Good and Evil series by author Soman Chainani, who also serves as a writer on the film. The story follows Sophie and Agatha as they attend a school that trains its students to either be fairy tale heroes or villains. The first novel sees Sophie, who initially aspires to join the School for Good, be chosen for the School for Evil instead. Chainani’s series consists of six books and has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide.

The rights to The School for Good and Evil were purchased by Universal Pictures in 2013, though Netflix later took over the project in 2020 and began filming in 2021. Paul Feig, who has helmed films like Ghostbusters and Bridesmaids, was announced as the director in 2020. I’m truly excited to bring this amazing, touching, funny, and empowering world that Soman created in his wonderful books to life,” Feig said when he joined the project in 2020. “I feel like a frog that just turned into a prince.”

“To have one of your favorite directors adapt your book into a film for Netflix is an honor and a dream,” said Chainani after Feig had been tapped to direct the adaptation of his book. “Paul Feig is a brilliant filmmaker and a master of tone — a perfect fit for the twists and turns of The School for Good and Evil. I have no doubt that he will make a true fairy tale classic.” The author will also serve as a producer on the film adaptation.

The School for Good and Evil is scheduled to debut on Netflix in 2022 but does not have an official release date yet.
