The first published piece of art for writer/creator Neil Gaiman’s 1989 The Sandman series hits the auction block at Heritage Auctions.
The first piece of art published for writer/creator Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman series is currently up for auction.
Gaiman shared an image of the original DC Comics house ad on Twitter, which first ran in Action Comics Weekly #628, two months before Sandman #1 was published in Jan. 1989. “It makes me wish that artists got a share of the proceeds their work gets as it increases in value…,” Gaiman said, who also shared the listing by Heritage Auctions. Drawn by artist Mike Dringenberg, the ad features Morpheus with overlayed text that reads, “I will show you terror in a handful of dust.” The artwork is signed by both Gaiman and Dringenberg and will be available for bidding at Heritage Auctions.
According to Heritage Auctions, the art measures 12″ x 17.5″ and was created with ink and marker over graphite on DC Bristol board. While there are some faint creases in the middle area, the artwork is considered to be in “very good condition.” The auction has not yet opened for bidding, so it is currently unclear how much the art will go for.
Morpheus, aka. Dream, is a character in The Sandman comic series, one of the seven Endless and the lord of all dreams and stories. He will appear in the first live-action adaptation of the series for Netflix, though the casting for the character has not yet been revealed. According to Gaiman, they held nearly 700 auditions for Morpheus before settling on the “perfect” actor who captured the character’s “love and sensibleness.”
The synopsis of the Netflix adaptation of The Sandman can be read below:
A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.
While the Netflix series has yet to receive a release date, the original Morpheus artwork will be available on Heritage Auctions.
