Dirk Maggs, director of the Audible adaptation of The Sandman, confirms the drama contains a subtle tribute to the late actor Christopher Lee.
A dedicated fan of The Sandman spotted a particularly obscure Easter egg in the Audible adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel series.
Twitter user Amanda Pike asked Dirk Maggs, the director of The Sandman Audible adaptation, whether Morpheus (voiced by James McAvoy) is using the French word “Aparté” to open doors. Maggs confirmed that Pike had spotted a relatively obscure Easter egg, which served as a tribute to the late actor Christopher Lee. “You have spotted an Easter egg,” Maggs said. “When we made [Neverwhere] I needed to indicated where Door had to open a portal (she just [does] it silently in the book) and found the word Aprita (or similar) for ‘open’ in Latin. When Nat Dormer said it in read through Christopher Lee objected.”

“It should be Aprité”, he said. As he was well read on many subjects and it was a word that could be whatever we wanted it to mean (thank Lewis Carroll) I adopted it for NEVERWHERE and later productions with Neil as a tribute to Christopher when things needed opening magically.

Lee, who passed away in 2015, appeared as the voice of The Earl in the 2013 Neverwhere radio drama, the audio adaptation of the 1996 novel of the same name by Gaiman, which premiered on BBC Radio 4 and was also dramatized by Maggs. The voice cast also included McAvoy as Richard Mayhew, Natalie Dormer as Lady Door and Benedict Cumberbatch as The Angel Islington.
The first installment, The Sandman: Act I debuted in July 2020 and adapted the first three volumes of the graphic novel series of the same name, Preludes & Nocturnes, The Doll’s House and Dream Country.Earlier this year, DC and Audible announced two more installments of The Sandman audio drama, which will be titled The Sandman: Act II and The Sandman: Act III.
