The Rock’s Black Adam ‘Disrupts’ How Superhero Movies Are Made, Says Director

[ad_1]

Black Adam director Jaume Collet-Serra shares how the movie will be a disruptor to the superhero genre like the antihero himself.

Black Adam fans are expecting the titular hero to break the rules to get the job done, and the movie itself is likely to reflect his rebellious nature.

In an interview with Total Film magazine, director Jaume Collet-Serra discussed the idea behind giving Black Adam its own style that sets it apart from the superhero pack. “Black Adam is a disruptor in the DC Comics world, and it has to be a disruptor in the way that we make a superhero movie,” said Collet-Serra. “I like to be challenged, and I wanted to create new technology, so we developed the way that [Adam] moves, the way that he flies, his costume. And then it trickled down to every other character and the movie itself. But there was always the goal – to be new and unique in the storytelling and in every aspect of it.”

In the comics, Black Adam has been known to do what it takes to get the job done. As the ruler of Kahndaq, he’s protected his country at all costs to ensure it doesn’t fall back into its former state. In ancient Egypt, Black Adam was a mortal man named Teth-Adam, who was enslaved until he was given powers by the wizard Shazam to take the upper hand against his oppressors. Because of his excessive use of force, these powers were taken away from him and he was imprisoned for millennia before breaking free and returning to the modern world.

Black Adam operates outside the parameters of heroes like Superman, The Flash and the superheroes in the Justice Society of America. Historically, he’s killed when he deems it necessary, and he often wants to keep other heroes out of his affairs in Kahndaq. He’s more of an antihero, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been aware of the expectations from the fanbase since he was first announced as Black Adam. Since then, he’s proclaimed, “The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change,” in reference to the character’s entry into the DC Extended Universe.

Johnson recently shared that he empathizes with DCEU fans as it pertains to their disappointments in the past, and confirmed that Black Adam would be paying attention to the pitfalls some of the other DCEU films experienced. From his perspective, there has always been something unique and different about Black Adam.

Black Adam hits theaters July 29, 2022.
