Marvel’s Punisher series from Jesús Saiz and Paul Azaceta replaces Frank Castle’s controversial skull icon with a new symbol.
Marvel’s newly announced Punisher series from writer Jason Aaron and artists Jesús Saiz and Paul Azaceta gives Frank Castle’s infamous and baggage-carrying skull icon a redesign.
One of the preview pages from Saiz shows Castle walking alongside members of the Hand, and rather than the skull, his chest is emblazoned with what looks like a tusked devil. However, it’s worth noting the cover art and the other preview page from Azaceta (set during a different period in Punisher’s life) still include the skull.
The Punisher’s skull icon has been a symbol of the character since his first appearance in 1974’s The Amazing Spider-Man #129. The symbol has also been co-opted by police and military, which stands in stark contrast to Frank Castle’s status as a man who takes the law into his own hands when the system fails him.
“Any ‘cop’ who wears a Punisher logo in his official capacity is identifying law enforcement with an outlaw,” Punisher co-creator Gerry Conway wrote in 2019. “These ‘cops’ are a disgrace to serious police officers everywhere. They show an imbecilic level of irresponsibility and should be fired immediately.”
Marvel Comics addressed the controversy in an issue of the Punisher solo title, which saw Castle chastising a group of police officers for wearing his symbol and telling them he’s not someone they should be idolizing.
“After writing the Punisher over the years, I’ve always been fascinated by the character of Frank Castle,” Aaron said when the new Punisher prestige series was announced. “What moments made him the Punisher, even before that fateful day in the park? And how far will he go to win the war that has consumed his life? Spoiler: as far as it damn well takes. This story is the destined next step in the dark and tragic evolution of Frank Castle, from troubled kid to heroic soldier to revenge-driven vigilante…to the duly anointed King of Killers. Believe me when I say, I am as excited about this story as anything I’ve ever written for Marvel.”
Punisher #1, by Jason Aaron, Jesús Saiz and Paul Azaceta, goes on sale in March 2022 from Marvel Comics.
