The Power Rangers have just been abandoned by their last bastion of hope in the fight to stop one of the most powerful enemies they have ever faced.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers #9 from Boom! Studios, on sale now.
The Omega Rangers are in a race against time searching for any possible means of stopping the most powerful enemy they have ever encountered. The alien Empyreals have been tearing through the cosmos, leaving entire planets annihilated in their wake with seemingly no effort at all. Even the Rangers’ best made plans proved to be useless in the face of such an impossibly capable threat, and to make matters worse they have nowhere left to run. There is only one being left in the entire universe that the Omega Rangers can turn to for help, and in their greatest moment of need the heroes have been abandoned by their last god.
When the Omega Rangers last came face to face with an Empyreal, it was after much carefully calculated groundwork had been laid by Trini into crafting the perfect attack. Unfortunately, it only left a flesh wound on the target, and the Rangers were forced to watch helplessly as yet another world was eradicated before their eyes. Although they were successful in rescuing a handful of Hartunians from their homeworld before its destruction, the heroes have once again been forced to return to Safe Haven to regroup as best they can. The short retreat has also given Trini an opportunity to try another course of attack suggested by Lord Drakkon. Through meditative striking of the remains of the Red Emissary combined with her transformation into the Yellow Omega Ranger, Trini calls out to the last surviving Emissary. If there is anyone that could guide them to victory, it would have to be the Yellow Emissary, but nothing could have prepared Trini for the reply she finally receives.
In Power Rangers #9 by Ryan Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Moises Hidalgo, Raul Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, and Ed Dukeshire, Trini finally breaks through to the Yellow Emissary and is forcefully lifted into the air as her teammates look on in horror. For her, however, she is floating through the wide open expanse of space alongside the Yellow Emissary.
Once Trini has emerged from her trance, she announces that she now knows the location of the Yellow Emissary. Unfortunately, she also brings a message that the god-like being wants nothing to do with them. As it relayed to Trini, the Omega Rangers bring “nothing but death.” It’s certainly the most ominous thing that the Emissary could have said, even if it is tragically true.
The Omega Rangers haven’t just been suffering lately due to the Empyreal threat. Their team itself has an unfortunate history in that of their Blue Ranger, Kiya, who went mad and murdered their founder, the Blue Emissary. There is also the matter of the Omega Rangers having aligned themselves with Lord Drakkon, no matter how temporary or begrudging that particular partnership might be.
Considering the fact that the Emissaries are directly connected to the Morphin Grid, there is always the chance that the Yellow Emissary’s statement was more prophecy than evaluation, but only time will tell, assuming the Power Rangers have much time left in the first place.
