[ad_1]

Marvel’s X-Men: The Onslaught Revelation one-shot reveals that a major enemy of the mutants is behind the recent return of a powerful Marvel villain.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Men: The Onslaught Revelation #1, on sale now

The arrival of Onslaught on Krakoa has been a great cause for alarm, one that the handful of heroes aware of the psionic entity’s presence had to keep secret. They’ve been racing to prevent its plans to bring about the end of Krakoa, and it turns out that there were shadowy figures involved who expected to benefit from an attack on the mutants.

In X-Men: The Onslaught Revelation #1 (by Si Spurrier, Bob Quinn, Java Tartaglia, and VC’s Clayton Cowles), it’s revealed how Onslaught was able to make it to Krakoa in the first place — and it turns out the malevolent psychic force had help from one of the mutant nation’s most dangerous enemies.

Onslaught is the psychic combination of Charles Xavier and Magneto’s darkest elements, creating a psionic force that was capable of endangering the entire Marvel Universe. It ultimately required almost every hero to beat it back the first time it surfaced and it was only the reality-altering capabilities of Franklin Richards that allowed the heroes survive the encounter. But the threat of Onslaught has remained, with the malicious psionic force proving to be a sudden and incredibly dangerous threat to Krakoa. As discovered by Nightcrawler, Legion, and their allies, Onslaught has been hiding on Krakoa, infecting the citizens and feeding on the lost moments from those revived by the resurrection protocols.

But it turns out Onslaught didn’t come to Krakoa of his own volition. In reality, it had been aided and enabled by an organization that has proven to be the most consistent foes of the X-Men thus far: Orchis, the secret alliance of anti-mutant scientists and leaders, working to destabilize Krakoa and bring it down. Their plan involved slipping a sliver of Onslaught’s presence into the mind of the mutant known as Lost. A frequent test subject of theirs, they were able to easily recapture her and insert the psionic presence. This way, when she was revived on Krakoa, Lost could unknowingly bring the villain with her, like a psychic virus. This was intended to destabilize the nation and lead to the destruction of the mutant race. Luckily, Nightcrawler set about stopping the force.

After being uncovered, it moved to a different plan — trying to finalize a murderous “Cruciball” where the various mutants would kill each other without abandon, while a mentally controlled Xavier erased the various minds within Cerebro. This would allow Onslaught to “eat” the psyches lost in the process, growing immensely more powerful. Luckily, Nightcrawler, his allies, and his disciples were able to defeat Onslaught and form the Alter — a safe place within the Astral Plane that is fueled and controlled by Legion, helping everyone “embrace” Onslaught once he’s released from Lost and weaken him enough defeat him. This process helps Nightcrawler finalize his designs for a mutant system of faith: the Spark, which brings people together and gives them the purpose of changing for the better.

If Onslaught had succeeded, there is little doubt that it would have caused serious damage to the still-growing Krakoa and severely weakened the mutant nation. This would have been a silent victory for Orchis, which has been trying to stay ahead of Krakoa and has even constructed Nimrod in their bid to counter the achievements of the mutant race. Even considering their other attacks, a psionic breach like unleashing Onslaught is taking things further than before. It also cements Orchis as the ultimate threat to the mutant nation. While mutant birthed threats like Mystique or Onslaught may try to disrupt the X-Men’s nation, it’s ultimately forces like Orchis that are in the way of the mutants reaching their full potential.
