Jon Kent is still adjusting to being Superman, but he may have just gained a new friend who could turn out to be his answer to Jimmy Olsen.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #2, on sale now.
Jon Kent’s recent ascension to the role his father once filled has set him up to take some serious steps forward in the DC Universe, especially if the hints in Future State were anything to go by. This means he’ll end up with plenty of enemies to fight inevitably, and will likely gain a few friends along the way.
During the course of Superman: Son of Kal-El #2 (by Tom Taylor, John Timms, Gabe Eltaeb, and Dave Sharpe), Jon Kent meets a potential new ally/friend in the form of Jay Nakamura, who could become the new Superman’s answer to Jimmy Olsen.
The Truth is a new take on the news, presented via a man in a mask on social media. The live-stream presents truths that had been hidden from the world, including the dangers facing asylum seekers as they make their way to the United States. Jon Kent is shown watching the live feed before trying to attend classes at college in disguise as Finn Connors, only to be forced to expose himself to save his new classmates from a gunman. This breaks Jon’s heart, as he just wants a normal experience for once in his life — even trying to sign up for the media department with the purple-haired Jay Nakamura just as the gunman arrives on the scene.
Returning to Earth after a talk with his father, Jon ends up listening to more of The Truth, and is inspired to do something about the refugees. The new Superman ends up saving a boat load of them, bringing them to Metropolis, and standing up for them when the police try to detain them for illegally entering the country. Flying around afterward, Jon is surprised to find the masked man from the Truth atop a roof, having followed after him when he reappeared. He quickly unmasks and reveals himself to be Jay, thanking Jon for the save earlier and commenting with a sly smile about how his blonde wig didn’t really suit him. Jay also reveals he’s from Gamorra — the nation the refugees were escaping — and that he knows what kind of trouble awaits Jon for interfering in their affairs and wants to help.
Jay presents an interesting possibility for Jon Kent, especially as Superman: Son of Kal-El continues to position him as the successor of his father’s legacy. It was only a matter of time before Jon got his own system of allies and enemies like his father before him, and Jay could present a very interesting take on someone like Jimmy Olsen. Superman’s long-time best pal, Jimmy has remained a constant within the DC Universe, always throwing himself into danger to help get the truth. Alongside the more hard-nosed Lois, Jimmy has been one of DC’s premiere truth-seekers, as well as one of the most consistent parts of Superman’s support system. It appears that Jay is set to fill that position for Jon, potentially helping him find more stories to investigate or more people to help around the world.
The somewhat flirty banter between the two could even set up Jay as a possible love interest, which would be an interesting place to take both him and Jon as characters. Regardless, it’s clear that Jay has some newfound appreciation for Jon given his actions, and will likely make a good new friend for Jon to have as he adjusts to being one of the most famous and powerful young men in the world. Having someone like Jay as Jon’s new Jimmy is a big step towards helping flesh out Jon’s life in Metropolis as the new Superman, and could go a long way towards helping him better adjust to the big shoes he’s trying to fill in his father’s place.
