The Movie Sneakers Are More Than Meets the Foot

Retailer Zavvi and artist Florey come together to create a pair of Akedo high tops that recalls the classic 1986 Transformers animated movie.

Transformers fans can now showcase their love for the franchise’s original movie with a new pair of high tops.

The new shoes are exclusive to Zavvi and were designed by Melbourne-based artist Florey. The customized pair of Akedo high tops features a fuchsia colored Autobot symbol on one side and a blue Decepticon logo on the other. Each faction symbol is encircled by a colorful geometric pattern, similar to the one seen in the opening credits sequence for the emotionally scarring cult classic Transformers: The Movie. The sneakers are made of canvas and real gum rubber and are now available for $59.99 USD.

Zavvi is an online retailer that specializes in pop culture merchandise. In addition to Transformers, the company has also collaborated with brands such as Stranger Things, Star Wars and Back to the Future to produce and distribute exclusive apparel and other goods. The retailer also carries a large selection of other Transformers merch, including figures from Hasbro’s Studio Series 86 line, which were also created to celebrate the last impact of the animated movie.

Transformers: The Movie was originally released in 1986. The movie was directed by animator Nelson Shin, and co-produced by Sunbow Productions, Marvel Productions and Japanese animation studio Toei Animation. The film introduces a new generation of transforming robots as the Autobots and Decepticon’s endless war is interrupted by a massive new foe who threatens to destroy all of Cybertron. In addition to the voice cast from the TV show, the movie also features the voices of Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), Robert Stack (Airplane!), Eric Idle (Monty Python and the Holy Grail) and Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek). The movie is also known for being the final role for legendary filmmaker Orson Welles, who passed away shortly before the film’s release.

The movie originally received negative reviews from critics and is infamous for violently killing off many of the original cartoon’s most beloved characters, including Optimus Prime, Ironhide and Ratchet, in an attempt to motivate kids to buy the action figures of the new characters. While the film failed to make back its production budget during its initial theatrical run, it has since become a cult classic and one of the most celebrated pieces of media from the classic Transformers era. The movie has been re-released on home video numerous times, with the most recent being a 4K remastered edition on Blu-ray by distributor Shout Factory.
