Friendship is very important and that’s as true in comics as it is anywhere else. Sometimes, two heroes work together and it just feels right. They were meant to be friends and no one is surprised by the fact that they are. However, there are other times when two characters are completely different and should not get along at all, but their friend bond is pretty much unbreakable.
Comics are full of friendships that just shouldn’t work out at all, and yet they do. In fact, they actually work in spite of their differences, proving opposites sometimes do indeed attract.
10 Superman & Batman’s Friendship Is Still Surprising Despite How Established It Is
By now, the fact that Superman and Batman are best friends isn’t weird but that’s mostly because people are used to it. They’re the World’s Finest team and all that, two of the leaders of the DC Universe, and they’re friends. It feels natural. However, natural doesn’t mean something always makes sense and the friendship between the two is always surprising.
They are just two completely different people and the fact that they don’t completely hate each other speaks to the kind of people they are. They’ve learned to work well together and have become friendship goals, but it’s always kind of weird no matter what.
9 The Fact That Captain America & Iron Man Are Still Friends Is Mind-Boggling
Captain America is one of the most inspiring heroes of them all and there’s a lot of reasons for that. One of them is his capacity for forgiveness; it helped him make friends and Avengers of former villains like Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch. It’s also helped him stay friends with a man who personally did a lot worse to him: Iron Man.
During Civil War, Iron Man did terrible things to win, including beating Cap almost to death. Their friendship was always a bit improbable— tech oligarchs and men of the people don’t usually mix— but the fact that it’s still ongoing after Civil War speaks a lot to Captain America’s character in particular.
8 Hawkman & The Atom Are A Pretty Odd Couple
Hawkman has a reputation in the DC Universe as one of the toughest— and most complicated— heroes around. The Atom, on the other hand, is known for being the bookish dude who gets lost exploring in the Subatomic Realm for years at a time. Somehow, though, these two very different men make their friendship work.
While they have very few interests in common, they are both men of knowledge. Hawkman knows history because he’s experienced it and the Atom is all about the physics, and they work very well together. Their friendship has been through a lot and yet it remains strong.
7 The Thing & The Human Torch Are So Close They’re Basically Family
The Fantastic Four is known as the First Family of the Marvel Universe, so that would make the Thing and the Human Torch the squabbling brothers. However, family members often have a little something in common, but these two don’t at all. The Thing was raised on Yancy Street, brawling his way through life, while Human Torch is basically the ultimate party boy. As such, the two butt heads constantly.
However, that doesn’t stop them from being the best of friends. They verbally spar with each other constantly— Johnny enjoys pranking and needling the Thing, and the Thing threatens violence— but that doesn’t stop the two of them from watching each other’s backs and working together. Sure, they fight like brothers but they’re allowed; anyone else should beware.
6 Damian Wayne & Jon Kent Get Along Better Than Anyone Could’ve Imagined
Damian Wayne can be very unpleasant. It’s pretty much his main character trait. He’s been known to take things a little too far and his mouthy, superior attitude can easily push people away. Jon Kent, on the other hand, is almost too good. He’s like a Norman Rockwell kid come to life but with an edge that can only come from someone whose mother is Lois Lane.
While it’s easy to believe Jon could be friends with Damian— he can be friends with anyone— it was harder to believe that Damian would tolerate him. The two were brought together by their dads’ line of work and became the best of friends, working together better than their parents ever did and forging a new World’s Finest team.
5 Professor X & Magneto’s Relationship Has A Deeper History Than Most
There are few more paradoxical friendships in the Marvel Universe than Professor X and Magneto’s. Their relationship is very complicated— they’ve been best friends, worst enemies, and everything in between. They’ve worked together to make the world a better place for mutants and they’ve also tried to kill each other.
However, seeing them together, the way they speak to each other, even when they’re at each other’s throats, shows the depth of friendship between the two. Their relationship has never stopped evolving and while they may not always be the best of friends, woe betide anyone who tries to come between them.
4 Swamp Thing & John Constantine’s Friendship Makes No Sense At All
John Constantine is not an easy person to get along with. He’s backstabbed just about every friend he’s ever had and he plays his cards notoriously close to the vest. Getting along with him is very hard, even for people that like him. However, there’s one person on the planet who he is actually friends with: Swamp Thing.
Swamp Thing and John Constantine are like oil and water and yet they get along famously. It’s very strange but it works for both of them. As far as friendships with Constantine go, he has rarely if ever actually screwed over Swamp Thing, which is saying something for one of Constantine’s friends.
3 Doctor Doom & Namor Are Improbable Buds
Doctor Doom having any friends is surprising enough. But when one realizes that pretty much his only friend is Namor, it’s even weirder. It seems like there should be no way for egos like theirs to coexist and yet they not only can coexist, but the two get along really well. Maybe it’s because of all they have in common but regardless, their friendship is just so improbable.
Doom and Namor have each other’s backs in a way that is kind of weird. Even when Namor is in one of his more heroic phases, he and Doom are still friends and Latveria and Atlantis have a very strong relationship because of their bond. Their friendship is super surprising, but it works.
2 Lex Luthor & The Joker Are Actually Friends
It’s hard to picture Lex Luthor or the Joker actually having friends, but for two different reasons. Lex seems like the kind of person who would not only be too insufferable to be friends with but also probably doesn’t think he needs friends. The Joker, on the other hand, is a psychopath and it would too dangerous to be in the same room with him, let alone friends.
While the two have been known to fight each other even at the best of times, they are actually friends. Lex Luthor is one of few people who the Joker will actually listen to and Lex Luthor understands the Joker in ways that few people do. It’s a weird friendship on the surface, but it makes more sense when considering such details.
1 Wolverine & Spider-Man’s Relationship Grew Tremendously Over The Years
Wolverine teams up with a lot of people but that doesn’t mean he likes them. The same can be said of Spider-Man, and for years, the two heroes did not get along at all. However, their stint as Avengers, as well as a jaunt through time, brought them closer together and now they’re the best of friends. It’s one of those strange friendships that probably shouldn’t work but somehow does.
The two of them have forged an amazing friendship against all the odds. The only thing they seem to actually have in common besides being superheroes is a love of redheads, and yet they’ve still managed to forge one of Marvel’s best friendships.
