Batman, Superman and plenty of heroes have wielded the power of Green Lantern, but one could do things that no one else could with them.
Throughout DC’s long history (and across the span of its ever-expanding multiverse), a surprising number of established characters have donned a Green Lantern power ring and joined the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps. Almost every major member of the Justice League has worn a Green Lantern ring at some point, and even villains like Doomsday and anti-heroes like Harley Quinn have managed to get their hands on a ring through cunning, brute force, or dumb luck.
This makes figuring out who the most powerful Green Lantern is extremely difficult. Veteran Green Lanterns like Hal Jordon and Jessica Cruz have had years to perfect their skills, but one-off wielders like Superman and The Flash have found ways to merge their abilities with the powers provided by the ring in impressive ways. However, there is one character who was already more powerful than any of the competition, even before he donned a power ring: the Looney Tunes’ Daffy Duck.
As unlikely as it sounds, Bugs Bunny’s iconic foil did join the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps once. In “The Green Lantoon”, the ninth episode of Cartoon Network’s 2003 animated series Duck Dodgers, Daffy accidentally swaps uniforms with Hal Jordon during a trip to the dry cleaners, resulting in the hapless duck becoming a member of the Corps. Shortly after this, Daffy is summoned to the Green Lantern Corps’ homeworld of Oa, which is under assault from their long-time enemy Sinestro. During his attack, Sinestro manages to kidnap almost the entire Corps, leaving the unlikely team of Daffy, Kilowog, Katma Tu, Ch’p, and Ganthet as the only ones who can stop Sinestro from using the combined powers of the captured Green Lanterns to destroy the fabric of reality.
At first, Daffy proved to be a very ineffective Lantern thanks to his over-inflated ego and lack of experience. However, the veteran Looney Toon eventually finds his footing and uses a combination of quick wit and annoying banter to distract Sinestro while his allies sneak in and sabotage the villain’s doomsday machine. When Daffy and Sinestro finally come to blows, Daffy survives being crushed within a hard-light construct of a printing press thanks to his cartoonish durability and uses his ring to create a giant alarm clock, awakening the captured Green Lanterns from stasis and allowing them to defeat Sinestro with their combined power. By the time Hal Jordan returns to reclaim his ring, Daffy has not only managed to save the universe but has also earned the genuine admiration and respect of the entire Corps.
Although Daffy’s triumph over Sinestro was impressive, it’s not a unique achievement when it comes to Green Lanterns. However, his brief time with the ring does shed some light on the terrifying potential that he and the rest of the Looney Tunes crew would have if they existed within the DC Universe. The Looney Tunes are famous for their ability to seemingly warp reality to their whims, pulling oversized weaponry out of nowhere and surviving otherwise lethal blows without so much as a scratch. On his own, Daffy has survived being shot in the face, falling from great heights, and being caught in explosions, all of which have been responsible for the deaths of many DC heroes and villains.
The power that a character who adheres to cartoon physics could wield in a more realistic setting has been explored in comics before; The Multiversity #1 (by Grant Morrison, Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, and Nei Ruffino) showed that the cartoonish hero Captain Carrot could survive decapitation and being crushed flat. Before that, Adventures of Superman #441 (By John Byrne, Jerry Ordway, Dennis Janke, and Anthony Tollin) pitted Superman against an analog of Mighty Mouse that proved to be more than his match.
Thanks to his unique ability to completely defy the laws of physics, Daffy Duck is easily the most powerful being to ever wield a Green Lantern Ring. Although he might not be the most experienced hero to ever don the mantle of Green Lantern, he is easily the most powerful character to ever wear the ring thanks to his unique ability to survive practically any and everything.
