The MCU’s Next Immortal Avenger Just Played Tony Stark

[ad_1]

One of the MCU’s upcoming Eternals just played her old Avengers teammate Tony Stark for a fool, and Iron Man didn’t even realize it.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Eternals #5 by Kieron Gillen, Esad Ribic, Matthew Wilson, VC’s Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

In the comic book Marvel Universe, someone is killing Eternals. and the cosmic demigods’ hunt for the killer among their own led Sersi to a lunch date with her old Avengers teammate Tony Stark. More adept and experienced in manipulating humans than her Eternal brethren, Sersi, played Iron Man like a fiddle to draw out her latest suspect in the case.

And even though she used Tony in Eternals #5, the one-time Avenger still managed to spin the situation to her advantage, gaining Tony’s forgiveness and simultaneously removing any pertinent knowledge he may have gleamed from her. These masterful moves on Sersi’s part reinforce what a brilliant schemer Sersi is, whilst also demonstrating that Iron Man is not always the smartest one in the room.

Sersi needed a face-to-face with the Forgotten One, an Eternal once known as Gilgamesh when he served alongside the Avengers. However, his small vigilante faction of Eternals cut themselves off from the rest of their family. Accordingly, Sersi had no normal way to contact him, but she also knew that the Forgotten One fancies himself a hero. He’s been fighting for “justice” for the Eternals who threaten humanity, being something akin to their species’ version of the Punisher. And Sersi played on that, using his care for humans to draw him into the open where a trap was lying in wait.

So Sersi went to have lunch with Tony and “confessed” that she was working with Thanos to kill all the humans and then take over the world. While this was a lie, it still got the Forgotten One to appear and attempt to capture Sersi for her supposed actions. That was when Ikaris flew in and distracted the Forgotten One long enough for his fellow Eternals to trap him in restraints.

Sersi then apologized to Tony, explaining that she needed to use him as bait. She was counting on the Forgotten One keeping tabs on her in wake of the murders happening within the Eternals.  She knew exactly how the Forgotten One would react to her lie and asked for Tony’s forgiveness before altering his short-term memory, making him forget that she referenced Thanos in her confession.

While Thanos is usually the kind of problem that draws the attention of the Avengers, Sersi and the other Eternals, to whom Thanos is a distant relative, want to handle the situation according to their justice. But this is another example of how masterful Sersi is when it comes to manipulating people. Tony is a hero, and his greatest asset is his mind. = Sersi was counting on his habitual curiosity to keep him in place long enough for her to make him forget that Thanos is a part of the problem.

After that, she was content to just sit back and watch as Gilgamesh and Ikaris beat each other. She had done her part, making sure all the correct pieces are on the board and removing any potential interference. She even suspected that the battle-loving Ikaris was enjoying getting the chance to finally hit someone after doing nothing but ask questions throughout the investigation.

Sersi’s manipulation of Tony though, reiterates that even though he is one of the smartest beings on the planet, he is not infallible. Tony is brilliant, but Sersi has the experience of ages and has used that to become a master manipulator. She played one of the smartest men alive into being bait and then got him to completely forgive her for that while simultaneously altering his mind to rob him of the reason why it happened at all. She was so effective that Tony even ended up comforting her in the aftermath.
