The MCU’s Hulkbuster Is WORSE Than One Iron Man Villain’s Armor

In Avengers #46, the Winter Guard takes on She-Hulk, and an Iron Man villain upstages Avengers: Age of Ultron’s Hulkbuster suit in order to stop her.

In 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Marvel Cinematic Universe delivered a confrontation that fans had been hoping to see unfold on the big screen for a long time: Hulk versus Iron Man, wearing his signature Hulkbuster suit. The Hulkbuster was lifted right from the comics, a massive Iron Man armor designed to take on Bruce Banner’s rage-fueled alter ego. In the film, Tony Stark unleashed the Hulkbuster alongside a cage of Stark and Banner’s design meant to contain the Hulk. Once the containment unit failed, Iron Man took on the Hulk in a devastating brawl. Although the Armored Avenger was eventually able to subdue the Hulk, their fight leveled an entire city block.

Now, in Avengers #46, Marvel introduces a new version of the Hulkbuster suit, one that belongs to the Iron Man villain Crimson Dynamo, and it’s much more efficient than the one Stark used in Age of Ultron.

In the previous Avengers storyline, “Enter the Phoenix,” multiple heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe faced one another in battle as part of a contest to become the Phoenix Force’s new host. During this contest of champions, Namor and She-Hulk battled in Moscow. But while neither Namor nor Jennifer Walters ultimately became the Phoenix, the consequences of this battle arrive in Avengers. Following the fight, Russia’s resident team of superheroes, the Winter Guard, infiltrate Avengers Mountain with the sole purpose of apprehending She-Hulk for her crimes against their country.

Once the Russian superheroes arrive inside Avengers Mountain, they don’t waste any time: they move into action, each with their respective tasks. For this mission, the armored Crimson Dynamo is wearing his very own, massive version of Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armor. He is the first to face She-Hulk, and he puts his armor to the test against her. But while She-Hulk expects a fight, she is surprised to discover that this Hulkbuster armor is not meant to fight but rather to contain her.

As soon as Jennifer lays her hands on Crimson Dynamo’s Hulkbuster, the armor grabs hold of her, and it doesn’t let go. The suit’s gauntlets morph into traps that grab hold of She-Hulk’s fingers, before the armor completely detaches itself from the Crimson Dynamo to form a Hulk-sized prison around She-Hulk. Once the suit is firmly formed around her, she is then blasted away, a package delivered to the other Winter Guard heroes who take the mission from there. Eventually, She-Hulk tears through the Hulkbuster suit, but it’s too late — it has served its purpose. Once she is free, the other Russian heroes unleash their weapons on She-Hulk, subduing her for delivery back to Russia.

Crimson Dynamo’s Hulkbuster is ultimately destroyed, but it does its job far better than the suit used by Tony Stark in Age of Ultron. While wearing the Hulkbuster, Iron Man was unable to prevent the destruction of the city around him. As for Crimson Dynamo, he completely subverted the expectation of a fight by building an armor that morphed into a containment unit that blasted the Hulk to another destination. If Stark had built a similar armor, it would have likely prevented the destruction that ensued in Age of Ultron.

Crimson Dynamo may be a low-level Iron Man villain, but Stark would do well to take a few notes.
