Marvel’s Eternals will show the struggle between the titular heroes and the Deviants, but an even bigger threat could be looming on the horizon.
Eternals will bring the titular heroes to the big screen alongside their lifelong enemies, the Deviants. Among other things, the film is set to focus on a new cosmic threat. The final trailer showcases an “Emergence” that will force the Eternals to come together once more to face it. Even worse, they only have seven days to stop the Emergence or it’s game over.
Although the Deviants are the Eternals’ main enemy, the Emergence seems to reference a much larger threat that will require all of the Eternals to defeat it. What exactly that threat is may have already been revealed in the trailer. The Eternals and the Deviants were created by the Celestials, a primordial race of beings with godlike powers. Two Celestials even made an appearance in the trailer, promising more will show up.
Celestials in the MCU
People familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies will recognize the Celestials. Peter Quill’s father Ego was a Celestial who wished to reshape the galaxy in his image. Additionally, the outlaw haven Knowhere is actually the decapitated head of a Celestial. With Ego being the only living Celestial encountered so far, the cosmic beings don’t have the best reputation in the MCU.
That bad reputation will probably continue if the rest of the MCU’s Celestials are anything like their comic counterparts. In the comics, the Celestials were actually responsible for the creation of mutants, as they performed genetic experiments on humanity’s ancestors. They visited Earth over the millennia to examine their handy work.
The Fourth Host
The Fourth Host, as it was called, was the final stage of the Celestials’ evaluations, in which they determined whether the species they experimented on should live or die. Odin and the Asgardians were not thrilled by the Celestials’ arrival on Earth and attempted to beat them back. It took the help of the Olympian gods to convince the Celestials that humanity was a worthy race.
In the MCU, the Asgardians are currently living on Earth and have nowhere near the strength they held before Ragnarok. The Olympians are nowhere to be seen in the MCU either and probably won’t show up for some time. The Eternals may have to intervene on humanity’s behalf and prevent their creators from destroying human life.
As the final Eternals trailer explains, the revival of half the universe’s population is what triggers the Emergence. The Celestials may go to Earth because it is the source of the cosmic event. The Avengers’ decision to reverse Thanos’ snap may also be the reason for the Celestials’ arrival, as they may not approve of the decision and, by extension, humanity itself.
Tiamut, the Dreaming Celestial
If the Emergence plays out in a more literal sense, it may be referring to one Celestial in particular. Tiamut, better known as the Dreaming Celestial, was sealed within the Earth after being betrayed by his fellow Celestials. The Deviants eventually managed to reawaken the primordial being, which also sent a beacon out that drew a terrible force called the Horde to the planet.
Tiamut himself originally intended to destroy Earth, but decided to judge humanity by his standards instead. A similar scenario may occur in the Eternals movie. If the Emergence refers to Tiamut emerging from the Earth, he may give humanity only seven days before passing judgment. The Horde could also play a factor, being the threat that comes at the end of the seven-day countdown.
Eternals is set to raise the stakes like never before. The Celestials, the Horde, and Tiamut are just a few examples of what enemy may be coming to harm humanity. No matter what the Emergence truly is, it’s safe to say the Eternals are in for a rough battle to save the world.
