The Matrix 4’s’ Most Meta Moment Is a Cameo

[ad_1]

The Matrix Resurrections poked fun at tech, media and entertainment today, but the most meta moment came via a cult-favorite cameo.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Matrix Resurrections, now in theaters and on HBO Max.

One of the biggest things The Matrix Resurrections promised was an evolution from the original vision the Wachowskis laid down. However, the new flick had many Easter eggs and homages to the trilogy. While it poked fun at the state of a world highly dependent on tech, media and entertainment today, the most meta moment came via a cult-favorite cameo.

This is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo, which had to do with Trinity’s husband. In this new digital construct Neo was tricked into creating when the machines enslaved him as Thomas once more, he gave Trinity a happy life as a housewife named Tiff.

The plan was to keep them barely apart so their bodies could generate power in the new Machine City, allowing the bots to feed. Surprisingly, Tiff had a husband and kids, with the former being someone very familiar to the franchise. This was because this character, Chad, or “Handsome Chad” as he was dubbed, was none other than Chad Stahelski, the stuntman for Keanu Reeves in the original movies.

This time, though, rather than standing in for Reeves, Stahelski instead steals Neo’s love interest. He was programmed to try to keep Tiff from becoming Trinity, even ordering her to leave the cafe they were at with the Analyst when Neo made her the offer to become liberated. It was a funny moment, as Stahelski kept egging her to forget Neo, only for Trinity to be awakened and knock him senseless.

It was serendipitous because Stahelski worked in the stunt business since the early ’90s as a performer and coordinator, leading to the job doubling for Reeves. Since then, they became long-time creative partners, with Stahelski directing all four movies in Reeves’ blockbuster franchise John Wick. This made their rivalry, vying for Trinity’s heart, even more engrossing despite Chad’s short amount of screen time.

“I said to Lana that I would be happy to help out, so send me the script because I have some time,” Stahelski said to The Hollywood Reporter. “Then when I read it, I was shocked. I said to her, ‘You’re kind of having a laugh, right?’ She said, ‘Oh, no, no, no, that’s the script.”

He even followed up by stating most of the crew from the original films are still good friends, in contact with each other, which makes his role even more sentimental as Resurrections paid clever tribute to the past while moving forward.

See how the two Neos from the old films collide in The Matrix Resurrections, now in theaters and on HBO Max.
