The Matrix Resurrections star Keanu Reeves discusses the Marvel Cinematic Universe, explaining that he would be honored to join it in some capacity.

The Matrix Resurrections star Keanu Reeves says he would be “honored” to play a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Reeves was recently interviewed as part of Esquire‘s “Explain This” YouTube series, wherein the actor was asked, “Are you ever going to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe?” Reeves objected to describing the MCU as a single universe, saying, “Isn’t it bigger than a universe? It’s almost like a multiverse. It’s a Marvel-verse.” He ultimately answered the question by saying, “It would be an honor. There are some really amazing directors and visionaries, and they’re doing something no one’s really ever done. It’s special in that sense, in terms of the scale, the ambition, the production. It would be cool to be a part of that.”

The video, which is focused on addressing rumors surrounding Reeves’ career, connects the question with a headline regarding the Marvel UK Twitter account tweeting and deleting a “Happy birthday” message to Reeves, prompting many fans to speculate over whether he has already secretly been cast as a superhero. In light of the current multiverse storylines seen in Disney+ series like Loki and What If…? alongside upcoming movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans are wondering whether Reeves may eventually debut as a Marvel hero in the near future.

Reeves has already worked with some of the “visionaries” involved in the MCU. David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, who directed Reeves in John Wick and performed stunts in the original Matrix trilogy, were the second-unit directors on Captain America: Civil War. While Wade Wilson isn’t part of the MCU yet, Leitch also directed Deadpool 2. Scott Derrickson, director of The Day the Earth Stood Still remake starring Reeves, directed the first Doctor Strange film. Reeves himself has starred in several comic book adaptions for DC Comics, playing the lead role in Constantine and lending his voice to a currently unknown character in the upcoming DC League of Super-Pets animated movie.

Marvel fans have long made Reeves the subject of fan-castings, with many suggesting he should play Moon Knight, Adam Warlock and Mr. Fantastic, among others. Oscar Isaac has officially been cast as Moon Knight in the Disney+ series of the same name, while Will Poulter will be playing Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The role of Mr. Fantastic in Jon Watts’ forthcoming Fantastic Four movie has yet to be confirmed.

Reeves is returning to the role of Neo for the fourth Matrix film, The Matrix Resurrections, which premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on Dec. 22.
