As the Marvels brings Avengers and other Marvel heroes together, one Agent of Atlas finds themselves at ground zero for a destructive new threat.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Marvels #4, available now from Marvel.
The Marvels has brought together heroes and villains from every corner of the globe to face off against a mysterious threat, but not all of them have had the same degree of success in investigating the goings-on in Siancong. While there are already multiple teams working to solve the problem, there is one hero in particular who has decided to have a go at it on her own. In fact, Aero has arguably done more by herself than everyone else combined — even if it may have just handed her a death sentence in Kurt Busiek, Yildray Cinar, Richard Isanove and Simon Bowland’s The Marvels #4.
The news of what has happened in Siancong has swept the globe almost as quickly as the mysterious, impenetrable dome enveloped the entirety of the nation. Everyone from Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to the Quiet Council of Krakoa has already begun to take action, yet none of them have been successful in making any real headway, since the inability to communicate with anyone in the region has made gathering intel all but impossible. For the Agents of Atlas, this has created an especially grave concern as their own Aero has been presumably trapped within the dome. Thankfully, that isn’t the case.
First introduced in 2018’s Aero #1 by Zhou Liefen and Keng, Lei Ling, aka Aero, has quickly become Shanghai’s premier superhero. With the wind at her command, she has faced off against all manner of threats from homegrown supervillains to the worst that Asgard has to offer. Alongside the Agents of Atlas, she has even managed to help in staving off the enraged Namor. Most recently, she was seen in Thoat Nhin, the capital of Siancong, defending it from the D-list supervillain known as Powderkeg, who she defeated only seconds before the crackling black tendrils that would become the dome over Siancong appeared.
As it turns out, Aero was quick enough to help rescue several civilians from the dome’s lethal effects by ferrying them outside to safety. As grateful as the people she had saved were, their families and loved ones were still trapped inside, and Aero wasn’t about to give up on them. Without any real knowledge of what she was up against, Aero decided to investigate the dome on her own, leading to the discovery that air passes through its surface with ease. As such, her next course of action was to try a nonaggressive method of passing through by opening a hole in the dome with the air itself. Without warning, the dome not only repaired itself but unleashed its tendrils upon Aero, and the side effects are gruesome.
Likely due to her powers, or possibly even the extremely minor exposure to it, the dome’s effects have only caused Aero’s hand to necrotize. That said, the situation is only marginally better than those who suffered an untimely demise due to the dome. With no other heroes around to help her, Aero could be forced to take brutally drastic measures in order to save her life, assuming that amputation would work in the first place. Whatever happens next will undoubtedly happen quickly, considering there is so little time to act on Aero’s part, and while it’s perfectly reasonable to wonder just what that will be, the far more important question is whether or not anything will be enough.
