The Marauders Just Suffered Krakoa’s Most Embarrassing Defeat

[ad_1]

Emma Frost, Kate Pryde and the X-Men’s Marauders just suffered one of the deadliest defeats in the Krakoa era, thanks to their newest villain

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Marauders #24, on sale now from Marvel.

The Krakoan era has been a period of prosperity and renewal for the X-Men. Since Krakoa was founded, Marvel’s Mutants have generally enjoyed a life free of persecution, hatred and even permanent death. But in Marauders #24, by Gerry Duggan, Phil Noto and VC’s Cory Petit, the Marauders may have just experienced Krakoa’s most embarrassing defeat so far.

In this issue, the Marauders encounter Eden Rixlo, an intergalactic outlaw. Rixlo is angry that Emma Frost stole his telepathically controlled ship when they were on a mission together. To appease Eden, the Marauders bring him to the Peak, where he’s given plenty of Mysterium, Marvel’s new unit of intergalactic currency.

To take things even further, the Marauders actually sit down for dinner with Eden on his old ship, which responds to his thoughts. Most of the Marauders are there, including Kate Pryde, Emma Frost, Iceman, Pyro, Bishop, Sebastian Shaw and even Lockheed. It’s at this moment that Eden betrays the mutants, jettisoning them out of the airlock into the vacuum of space so he can keep the Mysterium and his ship.

This kills almost all of the Marauders in one fell swoop, giving Krakoa their most embarrassing defeat. It’s true that the Marauders will almost certainly be brought back through the Krakoan resurrection protocols. Even so, this will certainly stand as a majorly humiliating defeat for the group. Not only did Eden Rixlo manage to kill the entire team, he also took off with his old ship and the Mysterium he was given.

This move turns the tables on Emma Frost, since she originally swindled Eden. Additionally, it’s surprising that those in the Hellfire Trading Company didn’t see this betrayal coming. Kate, Emma and Shaw have all been involved in underhanded political machinations during their time on the Quiet Council, so they should certainly be aware of when they’re being played.

On top of everything else, most of the Marauders were killed in one fell swoop by just one man. This is a fairly powerful group, containing an Omega-Level mutant in Iceman, among several other powerful mutants. For this team in particular, this moment is as embarrassing as it is deadly.

While this is one of the deadliest moments in the Krakoan era so far, it’s not the first time a team of veteran mutants has been killed in space. The first time something like this happened was in 2019’s House of X #4, by Jonathan Hickman, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia and VC’s Clayton Cowles. This incident saw a whole team of X-Men on a mission to the Orchis Forge, where they destroyed Mother Mold. In the process, however, the whole team suffered some gruesome deaths before being brought back to life.

Another, even more violent massacre occurred in 2020’s Hellions #6, by Zeb Wells, Carmen Carnero, David Curiel and VC’s Ariana Maher. During X of Swords, the Hellions went on a mission to Arakko, where they met a violent end. Most of the team was slaughtered by the mutants known as the Locus Vile, while the others were betrayed by Mister Sinister, finishing off the whole group.

All of these occasions were brutal and violent, killing entire teams of mutants. Still, no deaths were as embarrassing as the Marauders, who were taken by surprise by a lone outlaw. In the future, it’s safe to say that the Marauders will return with a vengeance. When that occasion arises, Eden Rixlo won’t be safe.
