The Lizard Almost Got a Redesign for No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home visual effects supervisor Chris Waegner reveals the VFX team discussed changing the Lizard’s physical appearance.

Spider-Man: No Way Home visual effects supervisor Chris Waegner revealed the Lizard nearly had a redesign for the film.

Speaking to befores & afters, Waegner explained that the VFX team decided to keep Curt Connors’ design similar to The Amazing Spider-Man but with a few small changes. “The Lizard (Dr. Curtis Connors) from The Amazing Spider-Man movie had a very specific design to him unlike some comic book adaptations,” he said. “For [No Way Home], we started off exploring some new physical changes but in the end our filmmakers kept him quite similar to the previous design, incorporating just a few subtle changes.”

Waegner added that the team enjoyed creating the Lizard’s part in No Way Home‘s climactic battle at the Statue of Liberty. “It was important to our filmmakers that we explore different facets of the Lizard personality in this film,” he noted. “It was a lot of fun for the team to ‘unleash’ the Lizard at Liberty Island. He was kind of like the proverbial ‘bull in a china shop’ — full of reptilian rage while running through the construction area, tearing through the scaffolding and chasing Ned and MJ.”

During the earlier parts of the film, the Lizard is seen in the Sanctum Sanctorum chatting with the other multiversal villains in a much calmer manner than in No Way Home‘s final battle. Waegner said this was crucial to explore Lizard’s character further. “Earlier in the film when he’s in the Sanctum, he talks with the other villains, inquires about his fate and shows a lot of personality with subtle facial features and his body language showcasing a different side of the Lizard,” he explained.

While the Lizard did feature throughout No Way Home, the character’s screen time was significantly less than other villains such as Green Goblin, Electro and Doctor Octopus. Rhys Ifans returned to voice the role, although his character was trapped as the Lizard rather than Dr. Connors until the end of the film.

After No Way Home‘s release, fans pointed out that scenes from the final battle featuring Ifans and Sandman’s Thomas Haden Church seemed to be using old footage from The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3, respectively. While this hasn’t been confirmed by Sony Pictures or Marvel Studios, Waegner did note how the VFX team used Ifans reference photography from his first outing as the Lizard.
