While it seems like Titans Season 3 will position Nightwing or Batman to save Jason Todd’s soul, the key might be another hero entirely.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of Titans Season 3, available now on HBO Max.
After the first three episodes, it’s obvious Titans Season 3 is going to focus on the battle to save Jason Todd’s (Curran Walters) soul. He’s been resurrected after Joker beat him to death at Gotham Amusement Park with a crowbar, opting to enact violence as the Red Hood. Sadly, it’s resulted in Jason murdering one of his former teammates. However, while many assume the key to saving him will be Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites) or Batman (Iain Glen), it’s looking like it’ll be a surprise face in Joshua Orpin’s Superboy.
Jason and Conner Kent haven’t really had the most iconic relationship in the comics, but Titans has already shaped a lot of nuance between them. It stems from Superboy saving him from falling to his death last season, with Jason actually taking a liking to Conner. He was truly impressed at this Man of Steel 2.0. Therefore, Conner could appeal to Jason’s heart and emotions to come back home.
Jason already views Dick and Bruce as failed versions of family, but what makes Conner tick as a sibling is he’s just as lost as Jason. Conner was grown in a test tube and has to live up to tremendous legacies — scrubbing the darkness of Lex Luthor and ascribing to the greatness of Clark Kent. Thus, both have a yin-yang connection rooted within, explaining the maelstrom of emotions they constantly go through.
Another common bonding point is Conner’s abandonment by Superman, reflecting how Jason often felt with the Dark Knight. Bruce and Dick slugged him back and forth to each other, so Conner’s perfectly placed to help Jason heal in what would be a new spin on World’s Finest. To top it off, Conner’s actually a scientific genius in Titans, speed-learning about Bruce’s tech and even cracking the EKG bomb Jason used to make a deactivator. Thus, he can match Jason’s scientific revolution and weaponry head-to-head.
His work can help scupper Jason’s plans, dissect the toxin Jason used before going after Joker, and also be employed by the Titans in the field to stop Red Hood from accumulating more blood in the ledger. Ultimately, with Superboy’s x-ray vision, speed and strength, Connor is also framed as the perfect equalizer for the hunt.
He’s someone who can rein Jason in mentally and physically, perfectly poised to remind the ex-Robin that second chances are worth taking. The fact Conner was also meant to be a destroyer last season speaks volumes. Therefore, through Superboy’s story, Jason might well realize redemption and forgiveness are something hard work can still garner.
The first three episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 4 will release on Aug. 19.
