The Justice League revealed that their favorite universe is easily the most adorable one in existence.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Justice League #63 by Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez, Ivan Plascencia and Josh Reed, on sale now.
Following their disastrous mission to Naomi’s homeworld, the Justice League took a second to recuperate and review what happened. Part of that included comforting a remorseful Naomi after she disobeyed orders to go after Zumbado. But in the process of cheering her up, the Justice League revealed that they had determined a favorite version of Earth in the multiverse. Specifically, Earth-42, home of the Lil’ League. And it isn’t hard to understand why this world in particular is their favorite.
Naomi was having a hard time accepting that they just had to leave the survivors on her homeworld behind. She knew that would mean leaving them under Zumbado’s continued rule, but her fellow Leaguers consoled her. They explained that she felt “the pull,” the need to help everyone she sees who is in trouble. This is what makes the multiverse so difficult for heroes: there is always some problem to deal with. The one exception to this rule is Earth-42 where everything is nice and the people are adorable.
Debuting in Action Comics #9 by Grant Morrison and Gene Ha, Earth-42 is a world inhabited by Lilliputian versions of the Justice League. They’re basically tiny, adorable versions of their main counterparts. The world they live in reflects their cutesy nature. Its heroes do keep the world safe, but for the most part, they happily frolic through their lives because their world has no violence or death.
That’s why it’s probably the Justice League’s favorite world. They don’t have to feel “the pull” there because there are no threats. It’s just one happy day after another.
But that doesn’t mean the world is without its dark side. Earth-42 lost its Superman and Batman to the Superdoomsday of Earth-45. That was the first real instance of violence and death in this world and it shook its heroes. But while Superman was lost, the Lil’ League got a new Batman in its version of Dick Grayson. Tragically, the dark times only continued from there. The new Batman ended up stumbling upon the terrible secret of the origins of his world.
While trying to stop the League of Sivanas in The Multiversity: Guidebook #1, by Grant Morrison, Klaus Janson, Gary Frank, Nicola Scott, Various, Ben Oliver, Chris Sprouse, Dan Jurgens and Cameron Stewart, Lil’ Batman began examining the guidebook to the multiverse. The secret he stumbled upon was that his entire world was nothing more than robots crafted by the Empty Hand to be used to spy on the House of Heroes and as guinea pigs for his plans, living and dying repeatedly in terrible tests. The denizens of Earth-42 were the perfect spies, docile and unassuming so no one would feel threatened by them. They didn’t even know that they were puppets in someone else’s game.
Fortunately for them though, the Empty Hand was defeated shortly after this secret was revealed. If the Justice League’s comments are to be taken as up-to-date, then the Lil’ League and Earth-42 are thriving right now — perhaps even being restructured as real people in the new Infinite Frontier. But despite their dark origins, it is a relief to hear that the Justice League’s favorite Earth is still intact.
