In Star Wars: The High Republic #8, Avar Kriss’ Force abilities almost prove to be a double-edged sword in the fight against the Drengir.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: The High Republic #8, on sale now.
Throughout the Star Wars: The High Republic subseries, the ways in which the Jedi connect with and use the Force has been explored, expanding the general knowledge of Jedi’s Force abilities. In Star Wars: The High Republic #8 (by Cavan Scott, Ario Anindito, Mark Morales, Annalisa Leoni, and VC’s Ariana Maher), the Drengir target Avar Kriss, specifically because of her ability to connect the Jedi through the song of the Force. The Drengir’s brief control of Avar almost leads to the doom of her and her allies, but thanks to Keeve Trennis the moment instead leads to the Jedi’s victory.
Avar first uses this ability in Charles Soule’s Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi. Avar views the Force as a song, with all life uniting to form a cosmic melody, and her unique view of the Force better enables her to see the connections between all living things. This ability is particularly useful in the wake of the Great Disaster, a hyperspace catastrophe caused by the Nihil. The debris from the explosion of the Legacy Run in hyperspace killed millions of people, but the Jedi are able to save billions more due to their combined efforts.
In the novel, Avar averts tragedy on Hetzel Prime when a debris container containing Tibanna, a gasoline, threatens to crash into the one of the planet’s three suns. The effects of such a crash would have destroyed the entire Hetzel system. However, Avar connects with her fellow Jedi to boost their abilities and guides them as one to successfully divert the containers path.
While Avar’s use of the Force to bring her fellow Jedi together prevented billions of deaths, her unique ability made her the Drengir’s deadliest weapon in Star Wars: The High Republic #8. In previous issues, Keeve Trennis used the Force to find the Great Progenitor’s location, but she realizes that the reveal was actually a trap for Avar Kriss. As seen in Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, Avar could potentially use her abilities to reach all Jedi throughout the galaxy. The Drengir work as a hive mind, controlled by the Great Progenitor, and the Great Progenitor plans to use Avar to control the rest of the Jedi.
Luckily, Keeve and Wayseeker Orla Jarenni arrive in time to save Avar from this fate. Keeve uses the Force to connect with the other Jedi fighting against the Drengir. Through this action, the Jedi give Avar the power to free herself, and they also disrupt the Great Progenitor’s connection with the rest of the Drengir. During this momentary disruption, the Jedi set up stasis field generators to contain the Great Progenitor rather than slay the Drengir outright, to preserve life rather than destroy it. In doing so, they cause the rest of the Drengir to return to their slumber.
Thus, the Drengir’s capture of Avar Kriss turns from catastrophe to triumph. Still, Avar’s close brush with destruction shows both the positive and negative sides of her most powerful ability, especially against their new foes. While the Drengir seem to be defeated for now, the Jedi’s abilities may still prove to be a double edged sword, especially against the Nihil.
