DC’s Elseworlds tale Batman: The Imposter has the Dark Knight set to go to war with someone who could bring a much needed romance to his life.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batman: The Imposter #2, on sale now from DC Comics.
Batman’s romantic history has been complicated, to say the least. In addition to his war on crime preventing him from having a stable romance, his connection to criminals like Selina Kyle and Talia al Ghul have only made things more complex for the Dark Knight. But in the reality introduced in Batman: The Imposter, he may have found the ideal romantic partner…although it is unlikely that the relationship will ever come to fruition.
Batman: The Imposter #2 (by Mattson Tomlin, Andrea Sorrentino, and Jordie Bellaire) reveals why Blair Wong is the perfect love interest for Bruce Wayne as it simultaneously sets up her drive for justice and mission to bring down the Caped Crusader.
In the world of Batman: The Imposter, Bruce Wayne has little in the way of a consistent support system. In this world, Alfred never became a father figure to Bruce and Gordon was removed from his position in the GCPD for working alongside the vigilante. Even his recent meetings with Leslie Thompkins stemmed from Batman having no one else to turn to when he was on the verge of death. But he’s found an unlikely connection with Detective Blair Wong. A member of the GCPD tasked with investigating the Dark Knight, Blair shares some surprising similarities with Bruce. Both are committed to their missions and have done their best to improve Gotham. Both are natural detectives, seeking answers to life’s questions. And perhaps most tragically, Blair knows all too well the pain that exists within the heart of Gotham City’s greatest protector.
Blair lost her parents right in front of her eyes in a way that is eerily similar to the origin story of Bruce Wayne. The biggest difference was that Blair’s father had been a GCPD officer, prompting Blair to follow in his footsteps. It’s her investigation into Batman that leads her to meet Bruce Wayne while searching for information. Assuming she’d be a useful way to hack into the GCPD data and help his own investigation into the murderous Batman imposter killing criminals across the city, Bruce ends up forging a surprisingly close bond with Blair in little time, initially giving the impression of a romantic interest. Over dinner, Wayne was surprised to discover that he had found someone who could understand his pain.
After sharing a kiss with Blair, Bruce admits that he’s fallen in love with her. Considering the typical fate of love interests that work with Batman, this doesn’t bode well for her longevity. Even worse, Blair is on a mission to bring down Batman, and she ends the issue by declaring that she’s going to war with the Dark Knight. Because this story is set apart from the mainstream DC Universe, anything can happen, a fact that substantially ups the ante for both parties involved.
On paper, Bruce and Blair make sense as a romantic couple. They’re both able to understand the trauma that motivates the other, and could potentially help each other through that pain. Blair might be the ideal romantic partner for Bruce, considering that she is one of the few people in his world who can truly empathize with him and possibly help him find peace. However, this all likely depends on if the hunt for the imposter killer is successful, and if Bruce Wayne is willing to relinquish his mantle as the Batman.
