The Future MCU Hero’s New Rival Finally Steps Into the Light

[ad_1]

As Moon Knight continues his nocturnal, new mission, Marc Spector faces off against a secret Avatar to Khonshu’s power in an epic showdown.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Moon Knight #3, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marc Spector has quietly changed up his mission focus and motivations as he resumes his superhero activities as Moon Knight, no longer simply a caped crusader that prowls the rooftops and alleyways of New York City on the hunt for criminals to violently dispatch with hard-hitting justice. Positioning himself as a would-be demigod and protective patron saint for the nocturnal community of Manhattan, Moon Knight’s mission has taken a decidedly more ephemerally theological bent though one without being in direct service to the Ancient Egyptian God of Vengeance Khonshu. And as Moon Knight continues to strike out as something of a free agent, he encounters a different Fist of Khonshu leading to a bloody showdown between the two lunar-powered avatars.

Moon Knight’s recent adventures have led him to found his own makeshift sanctuary/private protection agency that he refers to as the Midnight Mission. In this new role, Moon Knight protects the things that go bump in the night, such as vampires and werewolves, from harm. This shift in superhero direction also regularly pits Moon Knight against a variety of supernatural threats that he feels violates the natural laws of the nocturnal community, targeting vampires that prey upon the innocent while permitting those that peacefully carry on their undead existence to thrive under his protection. And while out on a routine patrol one night in New York, Moon Knight finds himself against a Fist of Khonshu that doesn’t employ the same considerations in Moon Knight #3 by Jed MacKay, Alessandro Cappuccio, Rachelle Rosenberg and VC’s Cory Petit.

Moon Knight Hunter's Moon 2

Moon Knight learns that some vampires under his protection were violently attacked by someone resembling his superhero persona and using the same crescent-shaped darts in their assault. As Moon Knight investigates the incident further, he is ambushed by a similarly clad vigilante that refers to himself as Hunter’s Moon, another avatar for Khonshu. Moon Knight quickly deduces that this figure is Dr. Badr, an acolyte to Khonshu that has similarly been blessed by the Ancient Egyptian God to carry out a mission of vengeance in New York. And with Badr seeing the existence of vampires as something of an affront to Khonshu, he quickly moves to put them down along with Moon Knight if his rival continues to stand in his way.

Ever since he was selected by Khonshu to serve his mission on Earth after being mortally wounded near the deity’s temple, Marc Spector has maintained a contentious dynamic with his godly benefactor over the years. Marc has expressed concerns over how brutal and bloody Khonshu wanted him to proceed, with Moon Knight eventually turning the tables on Khonshu when the Egyptian god had him take a stand against the Avengers to steal their magical powers and rewrite the Marvel Universe in his image resulting in Khonshu’s banishment.

Hunter's Moon 1

While Hunter’s Moon certainly gets the drop on Moon Knight and nearly triumphs over his moonlit rival, Moon Knight is quick to show Hunter’s Moon why he has been the Fist of Khonshu for years. When Hunter’s Moon moves to finish off a group of vampires under Moon Knight’s protection after the two antiheroes’ initial skirmish, Moon Knight launches an ambush of his own, brutally beating the new avatar within an inch of his life. And with Hunter’s Moon humiliated and cast out of the Midnight Mission, the feud between the two men is only poised to grow even more bloody as the two Fists of Khonshu inevitably meet again.
