FROM THE BRINK OF RUIN, RESURGENCE

In the 1950s, Timely became Atlas, which in the 1960s became Marvel, the House of Ideas. The brand went global, sparking a true revolution for the world of comics. Lee, Kirby, Ditko and other great creators gave us a universe of Super Heroes who always manage to lose, even when they win. They’re all too human with super problems, making them much-loved by the readers. And one day Captain America joins them, straight out of World War II…

In the icy waters of the North Sea, the Sub-Mariner has been swimming for hours, venting his rage against the despised human race. He is furious, out of control, and convinced that Hulk betrayed him in the last battle against the Avengers. Namor swears he’ll get his revenge and destroys everything in sight. He doesn’t realize that in his pique of rage he has crossed the ocean where he finds a block of ice being worshipped by a village of Inuit people.

There’s something—or someone— inside the ice. At first, the figure appears petrified, unidentifiable. Namor, still tormented by his anger, could not care less, throwing the frozen totem into the air as terrorized Inuits take flight. But for once, Namor’s violence seems to bode well. The block of ice is dragged into the warm waters of the gulf. As it melts, it meets up with the Avengers’ submarine and Giant-Man uses his huge hand to scoop up the body.

Inside the ice, apparently in suspended animation, is a blond-haired man. He’s wearing a tattered army suit. Underneath, a strange blue costume with red and white stripes, red gloves, a mask with the “A” on it and a circular shield. Incredible, if not impossible, it’s him; the hero who fought against the Nazis in the 1940s, to protect the free world: Captain America. But twenty years have gone by—how could he be here now, still looking so young?
