‘The Expendables’ and ‘Rambo’ TV Shows Are Under Consideration

[ad_1]

It wasn’t very long ago that the unsuccessful idea for a Rambo TV series resurfaced, and now it appears that Millennium Media, who owns the rights to the IP, may be exploring reviving it, as well as considering the same treatment for another Stallone franchise, The Expendables. With streaming services clamoring for new material, most of which has been updating existing movie franchises like Amazon Prime’s I Know What You Did Last Summer and the impending Alien series, it was only a matter of time before the likes of Rambo returned to the spotlight.

Although Sylvester Stallone has stated that he would consider making another Rambo film about him returning to the Native American reservation where he grew up, a new TV series based on the war veteran would most likely reboot the franchise with a new actor in the title role and a fresh story that would return Rambo back to his roots. Perhaps it will go even further back as more of a prequel to First Blood; if they break away from the constraints of the film franchise, which is pretty much dead in the water without Stallone, there is a lot of room to work with.

Stallone also appears to be finished with The Expendables franchise, having finished filming his sequences for the upcoming fourth edition. Stallone wrote, directed, and starred in the first film of the series in 2010, with a who’s who of action heroes like Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, and Mickey Rourke. Following sequels added Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Harrison Ford, and Mel Gibson to the list of famous stars, and by 2014’s The Expendables 3 it appeared that the old man bandwagon had come to a halt.

Of course, here we are seven years later, and the old guys are back in the action with almost the same cast, with the implication that while Stallone is retiring, he’s leaving the franchise’s future in the hands of co-star Jason Statham. With that in mind, predicting where a TV series will go and whether any of the movie stars will appear is difficult.

Millennium Media president Jeffrey Greenstein told The Hollywood Reporter that although they are only in the early development stages, there is definitely a plan to expand their TV range using their best known IPs. “Our focus has always been on feature film, we do have a slate of TV that we’re developing. But my plan is to focus on our IP within the TV space and build out Has Fallen TV, Rambo TV, Expendables TV. We’re playing around with Hellboy TV. So there are lots of opportunities, but I really want to launch something IP-driven first before we start developing original content.”

While Hallboy doesn’t really seem like a promising project, Expendables and Rambo may have legs. Either way, while we wait for more information on this front, we can always look forward to The Expendables 4, which is set to hit theaters in 2022.
