The Equalizer Raises the Stakes In Season 2 Premiere

[ad_1]

Season 1 of The Equalizer saw Queen Latifah go up against some nasty villains, but Season 2 raises the stakes right at the start.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Equalizer Season 2, Episode 1, “Aftermath,” which aired Sunday October 11th on CBS.

The CBS remake The Equalizer had its Season 2 premiere last Sunday, bringing Queen Latifah back to the small screen as ex-C.I.A. agent-turned-equalizing vigilante Robyn McCall. Season 1 of the show saw Robyn take on a slew of cases where everyday people needed help but couldn’t turn to the police for it. These cases pitted her up against all sorts of villains, from serial killers to alt-right terrorists. Yet the first episode of Season 2, titled “Aftermath,” raised the stakes even higher when Robyn came across rogue C.I.A. agents.

Before she could deal with the rogue agents, Robyn first had to deal with troubles at home. Robyn’s daughter Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes) learned of her mother’s hidden past as a C.I.A. agent and her current vigilante activities. The teenage girl felt betrayed by her mom and pulled away from Robyn and her Aunt Vi (Lorraine Toussaint). This caused Robyn to consider ending her vigilante life to spend more time with Delilah and reforge their relationship.

Enter rogue C.I.A. agents, who posed as bank robbers and ended up killing a recurring character in the process. Detective Paley was shot down during the attack, leaving Robyn’s reluctant partner-in-crime and love interest Detective Marcus Dante (Tory Kittles) with a desire to “equalize” the situation. Robyn takes on the case and comes up against the rogue agents, who were hired by a congressman to recover documents tying him to illegal foreign dealings.

Being former C.I.A., the agents had Robyn’s advantage of not existing on any databases, leveling the playing field. When Robyn’s teammates Harry (Adam Goldberg) and Mel (Liza Lapira) attempt to find the agents by looking through phone records, a cyber attack against them forces Harry to shut down his entire operation. This shakes him, and shows just how dangerous the team’s new enemies are.

Season 2 ups the ante by laying out Robyn — and the team’s — vulnerabilities and insecurities while drawing out bigger threats. Robyn’s struggles with her daughter lead her to consider abandoning the work that meant so much to her. Harry went into hiding to escape the government and was almost exposed by the cyber attack. His vulnerable moment leads to him asking Robyn to help bring him “back to life,” so he won’t ever experience that again.

With Episode 1 of the new season already raising the stakes, the rest of Season 2 is likely going to see things get even more dangerous. Robyn already faced Russian agents last season, meaning more foreign agents could make an appearance in upcoming episodes. Delilah and Aunt Vi’s knowledge of Robyn’s identity will probably make them targets at some point. If Harry does manage to regain his identity, he too could become a target for foreign agents or Robyn’s enemies looking to get to her.

Yet most frightening of all is the demon of Robyn’s past rearing its ugly head. Mason Quinn is a terrorist that Robyn apprehended during her time with the C.I.A. That arrest didn’t come easy, with Quinn nearly killing Robyn in the process. Robyn dealt with betrayal of her own when she learned her friend and fellow ex-C.I.A. operative Bishop (Chris Noth) knew the C.I.A. traded Quinn in a prisoner exchange and didn’t tell her. Quinn being free means Robyn will face the terrorist again at some point, either through her tracking him down or her work as the Equalizer drawing him out. Either way, Robyn is in for a whole new type of danger in the episodes to come.

The Equalizer airs Sundays on CBS.
