The Defenders Are Out of Their Depth Against a Cosmic Marvel God’s Creators

[ad_1]

Doctor Strange and the Defenders are on a mission to track down one of Marvel’s oldest and most dangerous villains, and he could be anywhere in time.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Defenders #1, available now from Marvel.

The history of the Marvel Universe is long and complex, even to the point that someone who sees as much as Doctor Strange can’t see everything. However, the mysterious Masked Raider just crashed into the Sorcerer Supreme’s world with a dire warning he never saw coming. And now, the latest incarnation of the Defenders are set to deal with the threat of the Enclave, the secret group of mad scientists that created Adam Warlock and just put a refurbished Korvac back into action.

As revealed in as Defenders #1 by Al Ewing, Javier Rodriguez, Alvaro Lopez, and VC’s Joe Caramagna, the Enclave’s current leader. Carlo Zota, turned to unstable time-travel magic to fix a mistake, and that could pose an existential threat to the entire Marvel Universe.

Zota Enclave 1

Since ancient times, the Enclave has, in one form or another, counted the most devious minds in the Marvel Universe among its members.  Carlo Zota has been one of the most prominent members of the Enclave since his first proper appearance back in 1967’s Fantastic Four #66 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Back then, Zota was one of the scientists who convinced Alicia Masters to sculpt their next synthetic being’s humanoid form. While the Thing’s longtime love was unaware, this was the basis of the body for Adam Warlock.

Moreover, a later revision to history turned Zota and the modern Enclave into a group with roots that extend to the activation of the original Human Torch, the spark that lit the Marvel Universe.

Zota Enclave

More recently, Zota and the Enclave were responsible for rebuilding Korvac in Christopher Cantwell and CAFU’s Iron Man #2 by Christopher Cantwell and CAFU. As fate would have it, the Masked Raider was there when Korvac went rogue. But instead of killing Zota where he stood, the Raider could only interrupt his dark incantation by shooting the spellbook that Zota was holding. While Carlo had planned on traveling back in time to correct whatever error led Korvac to rebel against him, now the Masked Raider’s interference has sent the scientist elsewhere in time, leaving it for the Defenders to chase him down.

Carlo Zota is far from an imposing figure or the kind of villain that stands out among the crowd, but he is still a threat to be taken quite seriously. Between Adam Warlock and Korvac, Zota and the Enclave built two characters who can go toe-to-toe with Marvel’s strongest cosmic entities. While it’s not clear where he ended up, Zota is smart enough to use his position in the time-stream to his advantage. And with a meaningful head start, Doctor Strange and the Defenders will have pull out all the stops to keep up.
