The Boys Shares a Fiery New Look at Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy

Prime Video’s The Boys shares a new photo of Vought’s newest superhero, Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles.

As Season 3 of The Boys draws closer, Amazon is giving viewers another glimpse of Vought’s highly-anticipated new superhero, Soldier Boy.

Released on the show’s official Twitter account, the image features Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy standing on a pile of wreckage, flames behind him, shield in hand. Referencing an American painter known for his patriotic portraits, the tongue-in-cheek caption says, “Is this Soldier Boy or a Jon McNaughton painting?”

Amazon unveiled its first image of Ackles’ Soldier Boy back in June, though fans got a little sneak peek in May when Showrunner Eric Kripke shared a photo of a bearded Ackles on set. It was announced in August  2020 that the Supernatural alumn would play Soldier Boy in Season 3 of the acclaimed show adapted from the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. Manufactured by Vought Industries during World War II, Soldier Boy is regarded as “the original Superhero.” Kripke, who worked with Ackles on Supernatural, said, “I think anyone expecting [Ackles] to show up and be a good guy, they will be disappointed.” The showrunner described Soldier Boy as “Homelander before Homelander.”

Originally belonging to a group called Payback, which Kripke has dubbed “the seven before the seven,” Soldier Boy will provide an opportunity for the show to delve into the early years of the supes and further explore the origins of Stormfront, a Nazi, and wife of Vought founder Frederick Vought. The latest episode of the web video series Seven on 7 With Cameron Coleman suggests that Season 3 will see Homelander struggling to regain the public’s trust after teaming up with the Nazi supe who, charred and limbless at the end of the season, appeared defeated.

Soldier Boy won’t be the only new face when Season 3 comes along. Nick Wechsler will be playing Blue Hawk, Miles Gaston Villanueva is set to play Supersonic, rumored to be an ex of Starlight’s, and Sean Patrick Flannery will debut as Gunpowder. The three supes are brand new to the world of The Boys; they are not part of the original comic books but are original creations for the Prime Video series. Other new cast members include The Walking Dead‘s Laurie Holden as The Crimson Countess and Dexter alum Katia Winter as Russian mob boss Little Nina.

Since Season 2 concluded in the fall of 2020, fans have been eagerly awaiting a premiere date for the third season. Finally, they can mark their calendars; Kripke announced that Season 3 will debut on June 3 with three episodes. Sticking with their Season 2 strategy, The Boys will release episodes weekly, rather than dropping them all at once as they did in Season 1. The remaining five episodes of the season will arrive on Prime Video each Friday, with the finale set to arrive on July 8.
