In The Book of Boba Fett, clues about the Tusken Raiders’ massacre hint that Crimson Dawn may be returning to the Star Wars universe.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Book of Boba Fett, “Chapter 4: The Gathering Storm,” now streaming on Disney+.
The Book of Boba Fett has followed after The Mandalorian in rehabilitating old faces from the original Star Wars trilogy. The Tusken Raiders and Gamorrean warriors have been given depth, while the Bantha and Rancor have made comebacks too. Interestingly, the series may also have just opened the door for a major crime syndicate who operated in the shadows for years to return.
Crimson Dawn appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story as the group that tried to play Han Solo, Lando and Chewbacca. By movie’s end, despite Dryden Vos dying, Darth Maul took over with Han’s ex Qi’ra at his side — a plot development which made it into the comics after The Empire Strikes Back. In the comics, Leia actually used Qi’ra’s help to try to get Han’s frozen body back, so there’s a chance the group or some splinter iteration still exists in this time period that’s set just after Return of the Jedi.
What paved the way for Crimson Dawn’s return was Boba using his ally Fennec Shand to get his ship back so he could execute the Kintan Striders for the death of the Tusken Raiders. However, Fennec told Boba that killing newfound tribe would require someone more powerful and clinical, which had fans wondering if the Pyke Syndicate hit back after the Tuskens jacked their train and arranged a toll for passage of spice earlier this season.
However, that explanation would be too obvious and seeing as Disney prides itself on surprises, the Pykes — or any other smaller gangs — wouldn’t be an impactful choice. Crimson Dawn, though, fits the bill as it’s a mafia who’d want the dusty terrain free to transfer whatever they needed, whether it be coaxium fuel, weapons, spice or other items. Seeing as Luke Skywalker and the rebels took the Empire out, there would be a power vacuum and an opportunity for a mob like Crimson Dawn to begin moving into overdrive to consolidate power.
This would resonate since it would give the terrorists their proper due, seeing as a Solo sequel didn’t happen. It can even bring closure to Qi’ra’s story by having her usurping Maul — who was killed by an older Ben Kenobi — and trying to stamp her authority.
Since it’s set on Tatooine, The Book of Boba Fett could even age up Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover as Han and Lando, bringing Chewbacca back too. Doing that would set up a rivalry with a reformed Boba, who’d have his own squad including a badass Wookiee in Black Krrsantan. But moreso, it would pit the ex-bounty hunter against a dark reflection of his own mission. He’s been forming a mafia to bring peace, which makes the chaos-loving Qi’ra and Crimson Dawn the perfect foil in this new war for control and order.
To see if Crimson Dawn does return, a new episode of The Book of Boba Fett arrives each Wednesday on Disney+.
