The Batman’s New Trailer Indicates The Riddler Knows Bruce Wayne’s Dark Secret

[ad_1]

An international trailer for The Batman strongly hints that The Riddler knows about Bruce Wayne’s secret identity.

A new trailer for Matt Reeves’s The Batman hints Edward Nashton/The Riddler (Paul Dano) may know that Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) is the Dark Knight.

The Japanese trailer for The Batman, which you can see below, puts a heavy emphasis on Batman’s secret identity. The start of the trailer features clippings from a newspaper regarding Bruce. Later, at the very end of the trailer, Riddler says he’s been trying to get in touch with Bruce as Batman takes off his mask. Although the trailer does heavily hint that Riddler knows Batman’s identity, promotional materials are often misleading and it’s possible the villain has been after the Dark Knight for some other reason.

Created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, The Riddler first appeared in 1948’s Detective Comics #140. The Riddler is generally considered one of Batman’s smartest foes and uses his formidable intellect against the Dark Knight. In 2002/2003’s Batman: Hush story — which was by Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair — Riddler revealed that he’d actually figured out the Dark Knight’s secret identity. This, quite understandably, caused a number of big problems for Batman.

The Riddler is one of several villains against whom Batman will face off in the upcoming film. Other classic villains such as Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) and Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin (Colin Farrell) will play a role in the film as well. There are also rumors Eternals star Barry Keoghan is the Joker, despite being billed as playing Gotham City Police department officer Stanley Merkel. Adding to the mystery is a report that Warner Bros. is actually test screening two different cuts of the film, one of which is missing an unspecified actor, presumed to be Keoghan.

A standalone film featuring Ben Affleck’s DC Extended Universe Batman was announced in 2014. However, following his appearances in Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, Affleck walked away from the role, though he is slated to appear in 2022’s The Flash. Originally, Affleck was slated to direct and write the film. However, Reeves stepped in to replace him. Filming on The Batman officially wrapped in March following significant delays resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Batman premieres on March 4, 2022
