The Batman’s Bruce Wayne and Alfred Have a Dramatically Different Relationship

[ad_1]

Alfred Pennyworth actor Andy Serkis shares that the butler and Bruce Wayne will have a more “icy” relationship in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

Alfred Pennyworth has been a significant part of Bruce Wayne’s origins over the many decades, but Warner Bros.’ The Batman shows them having a drastically different dynamic.

In an upcoming issue of Empire magazine, Andy Serkis, who plays Alfred Pennyworth, revealed where the two allies are at in The Batman. “Bruce is on this nihilistic journey, and they’ve pulled apart … It’s got to the point where they almost no longer talk,” he said. “If they bump into each other in the corridor, it’s a very icy and painful greeting. They almost live in separate worlds now.”

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, carving out his identity in a crime-ridden Gotham City. In many incarnations, Alfred is the dutiful father-figure/mentor, offering the devoted hero sage council when he needs it most. While Batman doesn’t always heed Alfred’s words of wisdom, there’s often mutual respect between them.

Alfred has been with Bruce from the beginning. After the boy’s parents were shot and killed in Crime Alley, he’s looked after him in a caring (and sometimes dryly humorous) way. In this younger Batman’s crusade, Bruce’s obsessive personality and commitment to his cause may create a wedge in their relationship.

In the trailer for The Batman, this issue is acknowledged in a dramatic exchange when Alfred says, “If this continues, it won’t be long before you have nothing left,” to which Batman responds, “I don’t care what happens to me.” In other adaptions of this story, Alfred is often seen attempting to pull Batman from the edge of his own destruction. Pattinson’s Batman appears unconcerned about his own well-being, which has canonically been his butler’s primary worry.

This isn’t the first time Batman and Alfred have been at odds, however. In The Dark Knight Rises, Michael Caine’s Alfred has it out with Bruce, reminding him how many times he’s been there to heal his injured body. Alfred feels as though Batman has taken things too far and only sees one end to his quest. Caine’s Alfred wants Bruce to have a life and he believes that leaving is the only way to make him understand there’s something beyond what he’s chosen.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is a different story taking place at a different time in the Caped Crusader’s life. The new movie is inspired in part by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s iconic Batman: Year One and deals with Bruce first becoming Batman and taking on the corruption that exists in Gotham City.

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman arrives in theaters on March 4, 2022.
