Andy Serkis discusses the relationship between the Dark Knight and his most trusted ally, Alfred, in Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman movie.
Andy Serkis opened up about the strained relationship between Bruce Wayne and Alfred in the upcoming film The Batman.
Serkis explained that Bruce Wayne’s most trusted ally and confidant “can see that [Bruce is] heading towards trouble,” in an interview with Total Film. The star added, “[Alfred’s] watching, and he’s still trying to hold onto [Bruce], to try to stop him from disappearing down a rabbit hole at this point. I think he believes that he’s dangerous to himself, and it isn’t particularly well-formed as an idea.”
Alfred’s reserved support for Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting career in The Batman represents a marked departure from other Bat-adaptations, which typically portray Alfred as an eager participant in Batman’s war on crime. Robert Pattinson, who stars as The Caped Crusader, recently confirmed that The Batman has other surprises in store for fans. Pattinson described the film as “a really, really unusual Batman story” and suggested its “sad, and quite touching” tone would set it apart from previous outings.
The Batman‘s non-traditional approach to the mythos reportedly extends to the iconic Batsuit, too. Co-writer/director Matt Reeves previously spoke about Batman’s “crude” look, explaining why the design eschews the more polished look sported by past Caped Crusaders like Michael Keaton and Christian Bale. “[Bruce Wayne’s] a rich guy who’s able to use the money to do this stuff, but he’s doing it himself, said Reeves. “So I wanted, at a practical level, for you to see the seams in everything that he’s doing.”
Reeves and Pattinson seem confident that their unique spin on the Dark Knight will connect with audiences. Pattison has confirmed that The Batman‘s ending leaves room for a sequel, further revealing that he’s already planned how Bruce Wayne’s character arc could play out across two more follow-up films. In December 2021, Pattinson stated, “I’ve made a kind of map for where Bruce’s psychology would grow over two more movies. I would love to do it.”
That said, the likelihood of these sequels getting the green light depends on the film’s box office performance. Box Office Pro’s latest projections forecast The Batman opening with a respectable $150 million haul. This is in line with the pre-pandemic performance of previous March blockbusters (like Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel), although some analysts have noted that The Batman‘s 176-minute runtime could hinder the movie’s overall success.
The Batman arrives in theaters on March 4 and HBO Max on April 19.
