The Batman star Robert Pattinson recalls the odd experience of filming many scenes for the upcoming movie using remote-controlled cameras.
Many scenes in The Batman, were shot without anyone behind the camera, as star Robert Pattinson recalls the odd, isolated experience of filming the movie during an ongoing pandemic.
Production on The Batman was tight when the film’s crew returned from a delay caused by one of its members testing positive for COVID-19. As such, Pattinson recently discussed how the filming experience took on an odd, isolated feeling when a more socially distanced production resumed. “We had earpieces in to have direction a lot of the time to kind of limit the amount of interactions,” Pattinson said during an interview with Movie Maker. “The most odd thing is that a lot of scenes had no one behind the camera, because we were trying — if it was already a setup, they’d just be remotely controlling it. Odd. Especially when you’re on a big set — just no one around at all. That took a lot of getting used to.”
Pattinson elaborated on the feeling of being removed from the rest of the production team while filming, with the actor going on to describe how the limited visibility created by a lack of daylight and his costume made him feel all the more alone. “We were basically in night shoots the whole time,” Pattinson continued. “I can’t even tell if people were there or not. And also your peripheral vision inside the cowl — I could hardly tell if there was anyone there or not.”
Production on The Batman was suspended in September 2020 after Pattinson was forced to self-isolate upon the actor testing positive for COVID-19 along with an unnamed member of the production staff. Filming eventually resumed, with director Matt Reeves announcing the film had finished shooting in March of last year.
With The Batman approaching its theatrical release in the coming months, fans may still be facing an extended wait. WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar recently commented on how the studio is taking it “day by day” regarding a potential delay in light of the latest COVID-19 surge due to the Omicron variant. When The Batman finally does release, however, fans could be treated to the longest Batman movie yet, as the film’s runtime reportedly clocks in at 176 minutes, just under three hours. If this is indeed the case, The Batman will surpass both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises to become the Caped Crusader’s longest solo film yet.
The Batman currently remains scheduled to release in theaters March 4.
