Matt Reeves’ new take on Batman runs for a whopping two hours and 55 minutes, making it the longest feature film starring the Dark Knight.
Following initial reports, it has officially been confirmed that The Batman will be the longest theatrical solo film to star the Dark Knight once it hits theaters, boasting a staggering runtime of two hours and 55 minutes — or 175 minutes total.
This length includes the movie’s credits, which run for about eight minutes, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed. Compared to the superhero’s other theatrical solo films, The Batman is ahead of 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, which was formerly the longest Batman movie with a runtime of 165 minutes. 2008’s The Dark Knight and 2005‘s Batman Begins stretched for 152 and 140 minutes, respectively, while the Batman films of the ’80s and ’90s were all under 130 minutes. The 1966 Batman film spinning out of the television series starring Adam West and Burt Ward was the shortest of all, only taking up 104 minutes.
When it comes to theatrical films starring Batman alongside other DC superheroes, the Dark Knight’s 2016 brawl with the Man of Steel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ran for 151 minutes, while Justice League was 120 minutes. In comparison to Marvel films, The Batman is right behind Avengers: Endgame, which holds the top spot for the longest superhero movie released in theaters, at 181 minutes. While it never received a theatrical release, Zack Snyder’s Justice League -holds the top spot for the longest superhero film of all time, at a whopping 242 minutes.
Aside from its runtime, The Batman‘s PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for “violence, disturbing content and strong language” was also recently revealed. The film, co-written and directed by Matt Reeves, stars a younger Bruce Wayne, played by Robert Pattinson. Still a relatively youthful vigilante only in his second year as Batman, Bruce investigates the Riddler (Paul Dano), a killer with a puzzle fetish who seemingly is responsible for a string of murders. Over the course of the film, Bruce encounters a variety of characters from the Batman mythos, including Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) and Penguin (Colin Farrell), and receives guidance from his faithful butler Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis).
The Batman went through a series of delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and was originally intended to release on June 25, 2021 before it was pushed back to October 1, 2021. The film’s current — and seemingly final — release date is March 4, and The Batman will have an exclusive 45-day theatrical window before it debuts on WarnerMedia’s steaming service, HBO Max.
