Black Widow is still reeling from the most devastating personal attack, and she might be putting herself back in the crosshairs of her worst enemies.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Black Widow #11, available now from Marvel Comics.
Natasha Romanoff has never had an easy life, especially when for so long it has been manipulated by forces outside of her control. In the wake of her greatest loss, however, the Black Widow has taken the reins in an effort to remake herself into the kind of hero she has only ever dreamed of. Looking towards the future is easy enough, but moving on from the past is next to impossible, so much so that Natasha may have just put herself and those she loves most in grave danger just by looking for her lost family in Black Widow #11 by Kelly Thompson, Rafael de Latorre, Jordie Bellaire and VC’s Cory Petit.
Black Widow’s headquarters has turned into more of a training ground than anything else with the additions of Lucy and Anya Corazon, aka Spider-Girl, though that is hardly the worst thing. It does make slipping out unnoticed relatively impossible, and on her way to meet with a contact Natasha is questioned by Yelena about her movements. Keeping secrets from her team isn’t something that Yelena particularly appreciates, though Natasha’s reticence becomes much more understandable once she is finally alone with her contact, Maxi. Apart from making clocks, the kindly man is also a supplier of the sort of documents someone would need to start a new life in a new place, as well as a fount of underground information. After retrieving what she came for, and a couple of other helpful tidbits, Natasha can’t quite bring herself to leave. At least, not without asking Maxi to find the family she only recently left behind.
Black Widow #1 by Kelly Thompson and Elena Casagrande saw the titular hero playing the role of working mom and doting fiance in a shockingly unsuspected turn that seemingly came out of nowhere. After being targeted by her worst enemies, Natasha had her mind wiped and was implanted in a loving household with her soon-to-be husband James and their young son Stevie. Despite this all being a devastating ploy to break the Black Widow’s heart and mind, her relationships with James and Stevie were nothing but genuine.
When Natasha and her allies finally set things right, she was forced to give up her new family for their own safety. Sending them away to live new lives of their own was easily the hardest thing that Natasha has ever done regardless of its necessity, and now it looks like she is ready to change her mind regarding that decision. It’s easy to see why Natasha would want to keep tabs on James and Stevie, but it’s that sentimentality that could very well be their undoing.
Putting James and Stevie into a sort of self-imposed exile was without question a heartbreaking thing to do, but it was absolutely the right call to make. From the outside looking in, it wasn’t all that difficult for Natasha’s enemies to bring them into her life in the first place, and violently ripping them away would have been a certainty if it weren’t for the help of Yelena and Nat’s other closest allies. Now that she has begun searching for them, it’s only a matter of time until James and Stevie are found.
Not knowing might hurt worse than anything else, but the cost of learning that her family is okay will likely be putting them right back in someone else’s crosshairs whether Black Widow wants to admit it or not. Depending on where they are, she might not even be able to save them again when that time comes.
