Romance animes are something I started watching more recently. I’ve come to realize that the animes I enjoy all have a similar storyline. The only difference is the background of how the two main characters meet.
Synopsis
The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten shows us the interaction between Amane and Mahiru. Amane is a social outcast due to trauma he experienced before while Mahiru is the popular girl at school everyone praises. On his way home from school, he sees Mahiru sitting on the swings while rain is pouring down. He offers his umbrella and walks home while getting drenched. Amane catches a cold and as he is about to enter his apartment, Mahiru is standing there with his umbrella.
To repay him for his kindness from before, she takes care of him while he is recovering and hence a cute story between Amane and Mahiru begins. From helping him clean his apartment to giving him cooked meals, Mahiru acts as a mother figure for Amane. Amane returns her the favor by supporting her, something she had never experienced before.
Amane accidentally lets it slip that he would love to have a freshly cooked meal from Mahiru, and both agree that they would split the costs and Mahiru gets to cook in his kitchen.
As the anime progresses, the viewers watch as both characters slowly start to break out of their shells and feel comfortable being themselves around each other. While Mahiru helps Amane with the everyday tasks and chores, Amane is helping Mahiru by being the support pillar she never had.
Thoughts
The interaction between both characters is very sweet, caring, and loving. We’re able to see how much they mean to each other and, to be honest, it does get a bit frustrating. From the outside looking in, we can see that they do like each other, but both characters don’t seem to recognize this fact. Anytime a cute moment happens, they immediately apologize to one another and indicate that “it’s not what they meant”.
At the same time, the main characters have very relatable backgrounds that may touch the viewer. Amane has dealt with trust issues because he thought his friends liked him. Turns out they only used him for his money, and as a result, he starts to question everyone’s true intentions.
Mahiru, on the other hand, deals with parents who never wanted her in the first place. She never experienced a birthday, and whenever she placed first in her school, her parents never congratulated her. She wants her parents to recognize her, but her parents want to treat her as a stranger the moment she leaves for college.
Overall, the anime is very sweet. Too sweet. Almost diabetic sweet. Being that both Mahiru and Amane have never experienced love before, what they think is normal is not normal. I recommend a watch if you are okay with dealing with overly cute moments.
The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten – 7.6/10
