Over the past few years, DC and Marvel movies have taken over as the rulers of the big screen. Even though not every trilogy is an epic three-part story, superhero movie sequels still generate a significant amount of hype and excitement for fans.

While superhero and comic book movies are extremely popular nowadays, many superhero series do not have the opportunity to complete a full trilogy. However, upcoming MCU films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will soon be released, causing many other superhero movie series to soon become trilogies.

Before both Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland took on the role of Peter Parker, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man was the hero of the big screen. The movies hit theaters in 2002, 2004, and 2007, and were all financially successful. Many fans consider Spider-Man 2 to be the best in the series and even go as far as to call it one of the best superhero movies of all time.

Rumors that Tobey Maguire will reprise his role in the upcoming MCU film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, have fans of the character hopeful to once again see this version of Spider-Man.

6 The Wolverine Trilogy Gave Hugh Jackman More Of A Chance To Shine – 7.1

X-Men Origins: Wolverine started Hugh Jackman’s solo series off in 2009 after appearing in all three entries of the original X-Men trilogy. The film also marked Ryan Reynolds’ first appearance as Deadpool. The Wolverine was released in 2013 with an improved box office and critical rating.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine trilogy concluded in the 2017 film Logan, which gave his character a hero’s death. While it was the only R-rated film in the trilogy, Logan is both the highest-grossing and highest-rated film out of the three.

5 The X-Men Trilogy Was One Of The First Superhero Trilogies – 7.2

The oldest trilogy on this list began in 2000 with the revolutionary superhero film, X-Men. The film introduced the iconic characters of Wolverine, Professor X, and Magneto, among others. A sequel, X2, was released in 2003, proving to be just as successful as the original. The trilogy drew to a close with the release of X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006.

The third film received mixed reviews but topped the previous two entries at the box office. The series would continue on in the form of several spin-offs, including a prequel series based on the younger versions of the X-Men.

4 The Thor Trilogy Explored The Cosmic Side Of The MCU – 7.2

Chris Hemsworth began his tenure as the Asgardian in the 2011 movie, Thor. A sequel, Thor: The Dark World, came out in 2013 and was set after the events of The Avengers. A fourth film in the series, Thor: Love and Thunder, is currently slated to be released in May of 2022 and will feature several members of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Director Jon Favreau’s Iron Man from 2008 launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the most profitable film franchise in history. The movie was a massive hit and Favreau returned to direct a sequel in 2010. Although it did not receive the same praise as the first film, Iron Man 2 made more at the global box office.

Before joining the Avengers, Chris Evans’s Captain America was given his first solo movie in 2011, entitled Captain America: The First Avenger. The film explored the origins of Steve Rogers during World War II and ended with Rogers waking up in the present day after being frozen for about 70 years.

The sequels, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, were set during the present day and were more connected to the events of the other MCU films. A fourth Captain America movie is currently in development and will presumably be led by Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman films are widely regarded as some of the best superhero movies of all time. 2005’s Batman Begins told the story of Bruce Wayne’s journey from spoiled billionaire to Gotham’s favorite vigilante. 2008 saw the release of The Dark Knight, which many consider to be the greatest superhero movie ever.

Christian Bale hung up his cape and cowl after The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, but his trilogy left a lasting impression on not only the superhero genre but also the film industry in general.
