Magic and mysticism have always played a large role in Hollywood movies, ranging across genres like fantasy and even sci-fi, depending on how one classifies the powers of a Jedi from the Star Wars universe. This has led to the introduction of quite a few powerful magic users in the various movie universes.
However, not all magicians and wizards are at the same level of power or skill when compared to the strongest examples of cinematic magic users. So today we are going to take a look at a few of the strongest and weakest wizards, warlocks and magicians to see how they stack up against each other.
10 Strongest: Gandalf The White Is The Strongest Wizard In Middle-Earth
When he first appeared as Gandalf the Grey in The Lord of the Rings franchise, he was already a powerful wizard who had fought many battles in defense of Middle-earth, though he was outclassed by his superior known as Saruman the White.
However, after Gandalf sacrificed himself in battle with a powerful demon of smoke and fire known as Balrog, he returned as Gandalf the White with enhanced abilities. While he used a staff to focus his magical powers, Gandalf still has a few tricks up his sleeve thanks to his connection to nature and his many strong alliances.
9 Weakest: While Lo-Pan Is Mystically Powerful He Was Easily Defeated
John Carpenter’s 1986 cult hit Big Trouble In Little China placed a wise-talking trucker in the middle of an ancient battle between mystical forces that was led by the cursed wizard known as Lo-Pan, who sought to undo his undead curse.
While Lo-Pan displayed a few powerful abilities, he was trapped in a decaying body after he had been defeated thousands of years before. He was forced to employ powerful weather-controlling wizards to fight his battles, and they were all still defeated by the trucker and his powerful allies which earns Lo-Pan the low-ranking position.
8 Strongest: Doctor Strange & Scarlet Witch Are The MCU’s Magic Users
While the main magic-user in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the former surgeon turned Sorcerer Supreme known as Doctor Strange, a new contender to the title of most powerful has risen in the Avengers movies and Disney+ series, WandaVision.
Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch’s powerful abilities were revealed to have a connection to dark Chaos Magic which could elevate her to a more powerful level than even Doctor Strange, which will likely be determined in upcoming movies such as Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
7 Weakest: Harry Potter Is A Child Who Was Dependent On His Magic Wand
While this might be a controversial entry, the titular star of the Harry Potter franchise wasn’t known as a powerful wizard until he spent a few years training at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and even then he was usually overshadowed by the overachieving Hermione Granger.
Another weakness exhibited by most of the wizards and witches in the Harry Potter universe is an extreme dependence on their wands, which has led to a number of disarming spells that take even wizards such as Harry Potter out of the battle.
6 Strongest: Excalibur’s Merlin Had A Number Of Deadly Tricks Up His Sleeve
1981’s Excalibur introduced a battle-ready version of Merlin as he guided the mythological Arthur into forming the Knights of the Round Table and drawing the mythical sword Excalibur from the stone to take his place as king.
Merlin manipulated events to bring about Arthur’s birth and displayed a number of impressive feats in his battles against his own apprentice Morgana le Fay. Excalibur‘s Merlin is just one of many cinematic versions of the legendary wizard, all of whom have showcased impressive magical abilities that would overcome most of the weaker wizards.
5 Weakest: The Wizard Of Oz Used Tricks And Illusions Instead Of Magic
The classic film The Wizard of Oz followed a group of travelers hoping to find help from the fabled wizard named Oz who lived in the Emerald City in order to send Dorothy home to Kansas, though when they arrived they discovered his impressive feats were anything but the magic they hoped to find.
Oz was really a human conman who used tricks and illusions to present himself as a wise and all-knowing wizard which put him in a place of power in the Emerald City, though he was quickly found out as just a man behind a curtain by Dorothy.
4 Strongest: Maleficent Is A Dark Fairy Queen Who Can Turn Into A Dragon
The Evil Witch from the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty has appeared on the big screen a few times over the years, with Disney’s animated tale introducing her as Maleficent before Angelina Jolie took on the role for Maleficent and the sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
Maleficent is an evil fairy with a number of powerful abilities that include knowledge of potions, sorceries and curses. She also has the ability to manipulate nature and even transform herself into a powerful dragon form.
3 Weakest: Mickey Mouse From The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Had Zero Control
Disney’s animated Fantasia musical anthology featured a short starring Mickey Mouse called “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” that also appeared in the sequel, Fantasia 2000. Mickey Mouse worked under the sorcerer Yen Sid, though his duties mostly involved cleaning up the wizard’s keep.
When Yen Sid retired for the evening, Mickey tried on his magic wizard’s hat and used its power to animate his tools to do his chores for him, though things quickly spiraled out of control after Mickey falls asleep with the wizard’s hat on. Thankfully Yen Sid returned to fix the damage caused by Mickey’s inexperienced wizarding.
2 Strongest: Willow’s Witch-Queen Bavmorda Was Incredibly Powerful
The Witch-Queen Bavmorda from 1988’s Willow was a powerful sorcerer who took control of the kingdom, though it was threatened by a prophecy about a child who would one day dethrone her. Bavmorda chose to take all of the pregnant women in the land in order to kill the prophesied child, though she escaped and was placed in the care of amateur sorcerer Willow Ufgood.
Bavmorda used powerful dark magic that gave her abilities like pyrokinesis and telekinesis as well as the ability to animate objects and transform others into animal forms, as she did with the rival sorceress Fin Raziel.
1 Weakest: Practical Magic’s Sally And Gillian Owens Are Small Time Witches
1998’s Practical Magic introduced witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens who were raised by their aunts in a magical household, though they were forced to live with a family curse that meant any man who fell in love with them would die.
While the sisters were quite skilled with potions and spells, they were frequently possessed by vengeful spirits and dedicated their meager magical abilities to breaking the family curse so they could live happily ever after as celebrated witches in their town.
