One of Marvel’s most popular characters, Peter Parker became everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man after he was bitten by a radioactive spider during his high school years. Fans have watched Peter grow over the years into the superhero he is today, though they have also seen a few other characters take on the title as well.
While there are a number of different takes on Spider-Man that have appeared across Marvel’s multiverse, there have been quite a few different heroes (and villains) who have called themselves Spider-Man in the mainstream reality.
10 Kaine Parker Briefly Took On The Role Of Spider-Man During The Grim Hunt
One of Spider-Man’s most personal villains, Dr. Miles Warren/The Jackal is a geneticist hell bent on ruining Peter Parker’s life after the death of Gwen Stacy drove him to madness. Jackal created a number of Spider-Man clones over the years that included the failed clone named Kaine who became a powerful villain after he began to degenerate.
Kaine later returned to warn Parker of the Kravinoff family’s “Grim Hunt” that sought to sacrifice Spider-Man in order to bring back Kraven the Hunter. Kaine posed as Spider-Man during a battle with the Kravinoff’s that ultimately cost him his life. He was then brought back to life and found his calling as a new Scarlet Spider, but his powers were slightly different than Spider-Man.
9 Mattie Franklin Was Gifted With Incredible Powers During A Mystical Gathering
A young girl named Martha “Mattie” Franklin gained incredible abilities after she took part in a magical ceremony known as the Gathering of Five, where each recipient gained either power, insanity, knowledge, immortality or death. Mattie was a fan of Spider-Man who decided to become a superhero during a period where Peter Parker had briefly retired.
She soon created her own costume and took on the name of Spider-Woman. Mattie originally had similar strength as Peter Parker, though she gained additional power from a villain named Charlotte Witter that came with additional spider-arms and psionic abilities. Unfortunately, her inexperience led to her death during the Grim Hunt much like Kaine.
8 Mac Gargan Used The Venom Symbiote To Pose As Spider-Man On the Dark Avengers
While Mac Gargan is better known as Scorpion, he also spent some time bonded with a bloodthirsty Venom symbiote to become a new version of the powerful villain which led to his placement on Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers.
Osborn was able to create a formula that allowed the massive Venom symbiote to replicate the form of Spider-Man so he could impersonate the wall-crawler along with Osborn’s other team of villains. While his time as Dark Spider-Man was short, he displayed incredible strength both due to his own enhanced physiology as well as the abilities of the symbiote.
7 Miguel O’Hara Genetically-Spliced His DNA With A Spider To Gain Enhanced Strength
Fans were introduced to a new Marvel world set 100 years in the future where a geneticist named Miguel O’Hara was forced to undergo genetic modification that merged his DNA with a spider in order to clear himself of a forced addiction to a synthetic drug known as Rapture.
As Spider-Man 2099, O’Hara gained the proportionate strength of a spider along with paralytic fangs, retractable talons, an advanced healing factor and enhanced eyesight. He also gained low-level telepathy in place of the usual spider-sense that turned him into a great hero of the future who also spent some time stranded in the present day where he worked closely with Peter Parker.
6 Miles Morales Was Bit By A Genetically-Modified Spider And Gained Powerful Abilities
While the character of Miles Morales first appeared in the Ultimate Universe as the new Spider-Man after the death of Peter Parker, he eventually transferred to the mainstream reality after the Secret Wars event where he continues to operate as Spider-Man alongside Peter Parker. Morales was bitten by one of Oscorp’s genetically-modified spiders that had initially transformed Peter Parker. However, Miles gained alternate abilities that included a stealth camouflage as well as a powerful venom blast which are sure to only get stronger as he gets older.
5 Otto Octavius Took Over Peter Parker’s Body To Become The Superior Spider-Man
The villain Doctor Octopus suffered from frequent battles with superpowered characters which damaged his body and left him near death. His final act as Doctor Octopus was to use his technology to take over the body of Spider-Man, though Peter Parker’s memories continued to influence him to be a hero.
As the Superior Spider-Man, Otto Octavius had the same powers as Peter Parker, but he outfitted his costume with advanced technology and improved on most of Parker’s gear to enhance himself further. He was forced to return control of Spider-Man’s body to Peter Parker when he finally acknowledged that Parker was stronger than he was and could succeed where Otto failed.
4 Norman Osborn Is An Alternate Reality Spider-Man With Four Additional Arms
Spider-Man and his allies discovered their place in the larger multiverse as avatars of the Web of Life and Destiny in events like Spider-Verse and Spider-Geddon, which introduced a number of alternate Spider-Man. One of these variants was actually Norman Osborn, whose own experiments transformed him into a dark version of the webslinger that became known as Spider-Norman.
He had similar powers though he embraced the additional arms that Peter Parker only briefly dealt with, which made him a strong threat to the gathered Spider-Men and later Otto Octavius after he returned to his Superior Spider-Man identity in a new cloned body.
3 Ai Apaec Is A South American Chimeric God
After the first roster of the Dark Avengers was defeated and disbanded, Norman Osborn gathered a new team of villains to continue impersonating the Avengers’ heroic identities. He enlisted a South American god known as Ai Apaec, who had become known as the Decapitator due to his preferred method of dealing with his enemies.
Ai Apaec was a chimera with a semi-human torso on top of a giant spider body, though Osborn was able to use another formula so that Ai Apaec resembled a six-armed human to become the second Dark Spider-Man. His incredible strength, durability and venomous fangs made him one of the strongest Spider-Men, but he appeared to die after he was shrunk down and stepped on.
2 Ben Reilly Is Peter Parker’s Clone & Operated As Spider-Man On Multiple Occasions
Jackal made a number of Peter Parker clones over the years, but the most successful first encountered Peter Parker during the original Clone Saga before he secretly left New York for five years to try and create his own life. He eventually returned to the city and created the new identity of Scarlet Spider, though Jackal’s manipulations led him to believe he was the original Peter Parker.
The clone took on the name of Ben Reilly and reclaimed the title of Spider-Man while Peter Parker retired, but it was revealed to be a lie perpetrated by Norman Osborn that ultimately ended when Ben Reilly suffered from clone degeneration. Ben was brought back years later and again reclaimed the title of Spider-Man when the Beyond Corporation enlisted him.
1 Peter Parker’s Strength As Spider-Man Is Measured By More Than Just His Physical Power
While there have been Spider-Men over the years whose physical strength have surpassed Peter Parker, he still stands tall as the strongest Spider-Man thanks to his never-ending dedication to power and responsibility. Like other similarly-powered characters, Peter Parker has the proportionate strength of a spider that has grown as he’s aged. Peter is usually able to draw on new reserves of strength by focusing on the lessons he’s learned from his family members and lost loved ones, inspiring him to save the day.
