[ad_1]

Captain America is one of the cornerstones of the Marvel Universe. He is one of Marvel’s first superheroes, one of the leaders of the Avengers, and one of the most admired heroes within the Marvel Universe. He is an incredibly skilled fighter who has fought some of the evil individuals on the planet.

Marvel really likes playing with their heroes. There are several alternate universes that explore different interpretations and iterations of their heroes. In fact, they have the What If? line of comics that explores key moments in Marvel history if important events happened differently. This has led to strange reinterpretations of several beloved Marvel heroes, Captain America included.

10 When Punisher Became Captain America To Fight Hate-Monger

After Captain America died at the end of the Super Hero Civil War, Frank Castle decided to don a Captain America-esque suit and go down to the American-Mexican border to fight the Hate-Monger. Frank had always admired Cap. The Winter Soldier wasn’t happy to see the Punisher do this, but he let Frank go to complete his mission.

This version of the Hate-Monger was intent on slaughtering Mexican people immigrating to America. The Punisher went down south to kill this Hate-Monger and free the immigrants from his threat. Frank never held the shield though.

9 William Burnside, The Commie-Bashing Cap Of The 1950s

Captain America comics were still being published after World War II in the 1950s, but this version of Cap and Bucky were commie-smashing “heroes” who were arresting supposed dissidents and turning them over to the government in a McCarthy-inspired nightmare.

Later, Marvel retconned this so that Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes disappeared after World War II, so the government replaced them with William Burnside as Captain America and Jack Munroe as Bucky. William was a racist authoritarian who became convinced he was Steve Rogers. He survived into the modern era thanks to his version of the Super Soldier Serum, but it ate away at his psyche. He went onto become a semiregular villain to Steve Rogers.

8 Peggy Carter, Because She’s Actually British And Not American

In another world, Steve Rogers was also killed when Dr. Erskine was assassinated. In this world, Peggy Carter took up the mantle of Captain America.

There’s nothing really wrong or bizarre about that other than the irony that Peggy Carter is actually from the United Kingdom but still felt so patriotic for the U.S that she became Captain America with her partner, Bucky Barnes.

7 The Hydra-Loving Cap Created By Kobik That Created The Secret Empire

This infamous Captain America came into being when Steve Rogers was sealed inside a pocket dimension and replaced with a Steve Rogers who was loyal to Hydra. His mother was close friends with a Madame Hydra of the past, and Steve was raised to be a Hydra sleeper agent.

In the present, he becomes the Hydra Supreme Commander and usurps the United States government on behalf of Hydra. He establishes a fascist regime with his own Hydra-inspired team of Avengers. Thankfully, the true Steve Rogers eventually returned and overthrew this Hydra-Cap.

6 The Soldier Supreme, The Combination Of Cap And Doctor Strange

Not too long ago, Gamora reconstructed the Infinity Gauntlet and went on a quest to reacquire the missing part of her soul. The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy worked to stop her, and, to slow them down, she folded the universe in half, fusing every entity in the universe to another.

Steve Rogers was fused with Stephen Strange, becoming the mystical Soldier Supreme. This hero was created through a mixture of chemical enhancements and mystical rituals to create a mystical super soldier to fight the Third Reich.

5 Steven Rogers, The First Captain America Who Fought In The American Revolution

Steven Rogers Was The Revolutionary War Captain America

Believe it or not, Steve Rogers was not the first Captain America. The first was Steven Rogers, an ancestor to Captain America who fought as Captain America during the Revolutionary War.

He had no superpowers, but he was a loyal and colorful soldier in General Washington’s army. However, he was ultimately killed by a cannonball later into the war.

4 Captain America-460, Who Was Sent Back To 1602 To Live With Indigenous Peoples

This version of Steve Rogers came from Earth-460, a world where the Purple Man became the eternal President of the United States. Captain America became a constant resistor to President Purple Man, and he sent this Captain America back to the year of 1602 in Earth-616 (the mainstream Marvel Universe).

This Steve Rogers lived with the Indigenous Peoples of the United States and went by Rohjaz. He decided to guard Virginia Dare, the first European born in America. He was eventually sent back to his own time by a Nicholas Fury of the same timeline.

3 That Time That Steve Rogers Became A Werewolf, AKA Cap-Wolf

In a mission involving Man-Wolf, Werewolf By Night, and K’un-Lun, Steve Rogers was transformed into a werewolf. It began with investigating a string of murders that seemed to be carried out by werewolves. It ended with Cap being captured by a villain named Dr. Nightshade and turned into a werewolf.

Cap was a werewolf for a time and even fought Wolverine. In the end, however, Cap was transformed back to his regular self in time for Infinity War.

2 Ultimate Scott Summers Became Cap To Hunt Down Ultimate Reed Richards

Scott Summers as Captain America

In an alternate history storyline for the Ultimate Marvel Universe, Captain America, Cyclops, and Jean Grey lose their powers in an experiment performed by Ultimate Mister Fantastic. This causes Steve Rogers to die, as the Super Soldier Serum is what was keeping Steve young. Scott Summers decides to go back in time to keep Mister Fantastic from doing this.

In doing so, Scott Summers takes up the mantle of Captain America. However, his quest is ended early by an attack by the Sentinels–which ends in this Scott Summers being killed.

1 Captain Avalon, The Arthurian Knight Who Existed Centuries Ago

Captain Avalon

In a 2000 story called Avataars: Covenant of the Shield by Len Kaminski and Oscar Jimenez, the reader is introduced by a different version of many of their favorite superheroes as individuals living in the era of Arthurian Legend.

One of those heroes is St’vaan, aka Captain Avalon. He has no superpowers and is just decked out in blue armor and carries a red, white, and blue shield. There is also an Arthurian version of the Hulk called Smashtroll Greenskyn, who is part of a team called the Champions of the Realm. Avalon and Smashtroll were famously included in the LEGO: Marvel Superheroes 2 videogame.
