The Mad Titan holds the God of Thunder’s hammer in a teaser for Marvel’s Timeless, hinting at a nightmarish future prophesied in recent Thor issues.
The Mad Titan Thanos seems to have harnessed the power of Thor’s hammer Mjolnir in a new teaser for the upcoming Timeless one-shot, which is set to cause massive changes throughout the Marvel Universe in December.
Thanos, gripping a Mjolnir infused with the Infinity Stones, appears on one of several Timeless teasers released on Marvel’s social media pages. “What weapon will Thanos wield to threaten the future of the Marvel Universe?” the teaser asks.
This isn’t the first time Thanos has been spotted holding Mjolnir in recent months. Thor #16, released in August, features a nightmare scene where the Mad Titan stands above a vanquished Thor, wearing a black gauntlet and holding Mjolnir in his other hand. Behind him lay the broken bodies of the Avengers, and in Thor’s final desperate moments, Thanos warns him that “kings do not beg” before squashing the Thunder God’s head with his foot. This vision was first hinted at in Thor #6 and described as Thor’s “one true end.” Later in #16, Thor says he increasingly saw this nightmare when he slept and considered it an eerie portent of the future. He explains how he decided to give up his iconic hammer, which was becoming increasingly uncontrollable.
The Asgardian previously speculated his new role as the All-Father and King of Asgard might have something to do with the hammer’s recent unpredictable nature. Mjolnir mysteriously disappeared in Thor #17, and while it is currently unclear whether it was stolen by Thanos or another threat, Thor enlisted Throg — the Frog of Thunder — and a new iteration of the Pet Avengers to locate his weapon. This motley collection of beasts previously defeated Thanos in 2009’s Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers.
The Timeless one-shot focuses on Kang the Conqueror and sees the time-traveling warlord encounter a threatening timeline that puts Marvel’s mainline 616 universe at risk. Previous teasers for the event feature Doctor Doom and a mysterious figure named Anatoly Petrov, who appears to be a new character.
Writer Jed MacKay previously told CBR that the one-shot, which sets up Marvel’s future in 2022 and beyond, would also serve as a character study for Kang, who “pursues excellence in all things, extreme self-actualization, and has at his disposal everything in history to test himself against.” According to MacKay, “When this new threat crops up, Kang pits himself against it not from altruism but from selfishness — a new experience to add to the sum of experiences that is Kang.”
Timeless #1, written by MacKay and illustrated by Kev Walker, Greg Land and Mark Bagley, goes on sale Dec. 22.
