Team Chaotix Is Hunting Sonic’s Dangerous Replacements

[ad_1]

Dr. Starline’s replacements are about to be discovered, as Sonic’s most obscure chaotic team is on the case.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog #47, on sale now from IDW.

Eggman’s former protege, Dr. Starline, has been putting a new plan into motion for some time now. The spin-off comic Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome by Ian Flynn and Thomas Rothlisberger has shown exactly what his twisted new scheme entails. He aimed to replace Sonic and all of his heroic friends with his own creations. With Surge and Kitsumi, Starline had created a new version of Sonic and Tails for everyone to rally around. However, one chaotic team is on his trail.

Dr. Starline tested out his new “heroes” by having them start the forest fire that was been plaguing Sonic’s friends for the past few issues of the Hedgehog’s own series. Now the fire is out and people are looking for answers in Sonic the Hedgehog #47 by Evan Stanley, Matt Froese, Matt Herms, and Shawn Lee. Fortunately, there’s one group for whom solving mysteries is their specialty.

This issue ended with the reveal that the Chaotix Detective Agency is on the case. With proof that the fire wasn’t an accident already discovered, there was a lead for Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, and Charmy the Bee to go on. They seemed to have been onto Surge and Kitsumi for a while now, as Vector was reading about their hijinks in the city seen in Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome #1.

This odd assortment of characters first appeared in the forgotten 1995 spin-off game Knuckles’ Chaotix. The game was designed for the 32X, which was a piece of add-on hardware for the Sega Genesis console. As well as Knuckles and the three members of the Chaotix Detective Agency, it also featured the return of arcade character Mighty the Armadillo. Unlike Mighty though, who only returned to the series again recently thanks to DLC for 2017’s Sonic Mania, the Chaotix have appeared in a number of games and other media since.

In 2003’s Sonic Heroes, they were one of four playable teams. The story introduced their detective agency and saw them take on a case that brought them together with the likes of Sonic and Shadow to take down Metal Sonic. After this, they appeared in Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Forces, amongst other games.

In the IDW comics, they’ve done plenty of things worthy of note. They found the missing Dr. Eggman and uncovered how he became the kindly Mr. Tinker. They’ve also helped the Resistance constantly, especially during the Metal Virus. After that horrific event, they kept incredibly busy with missing person cases and helped deduce the return of the Deadly Six.

So how will they fare in this next case? Though their methods are manic, they always get the job done. They went from having zero work in Sonic Heroes to being swamped with cases now, so clearly people have noticed their value. Starline’s new crew may have even left a number of clues. When they tried to break into Tails’ workshop, they had to leave in a rush. There’s likely something for the Chaotix to go on there, as well as the evidence from the recent forest fire.

It’s only a matter of time before Team Chaotix gets to the bottom of this case. However, whether they can handle Surge and Kitsunami on their own remains to be seen. Starline has had a lot of time to prepare his latest creations and it’s more than likely he’s prepared them well enough to face off against any of Sonic’s allies – including the Chaotix.
