The Tales series has a unique structure newcomers may be unfamiliar with. These tips will help you get the most out of your first Tales experience.
The Tales series has been around for over 25 year now and is still going strong with the latest game, Tales of Arise. While every Tales game’s story is different (with the exception of a few sequels), the series has the same basic gameplay formula. There are certain features and secrets standard to a Tales game that series newcomers may miss out on.
General RPG elements like talking to NPCs and exploring are still a big part of the Tales games, but there are some extra steps and secrets, many of which aren’t tracked. Tales of Arise is no different, so these tips will help those looking to make it their first Tales game get the most out of their experience
Back Track & Talk to Everyone
This seems standard for any RPG, but it’s especially important for finding side-quests and the best equipment in Tales games. The series doesn’t include quest indicators or tracking, meaning it’s up to the player to find and complete them. Sometimes, quest-givers won’t even give information on the next step. Speaking to NPCs will likely net some information about secrets in the area. It can also kick off side-quests that will provide more information about the world’s lore or even some rare items.
From the beginning, you might want to back track to towns, as you may encounter the same NPCs, the next step in a side-quest or new goals to pursue. There are tons of secrets in Tales games, but it’s on the player to find them rather than searching for them on a map.
Master Combat Gimmicks
For the most part, combat in Tales games is the same, taking place in an arena with action combat. However, each game has its own mechanics when it comes to special attacks and magic that can be complex at the start but become important. You can generally get through a Tales game with some basic skill, but late-game fights or higher difficulty levels require players to understand how these gimmicks work. There’s a lot of depth to each Tales game, and it’s especially important to master higher-level skills for those who want to take on secret bosses.
Hidden Enemies & Bosses
There are tons of hidden bosses in Tales games, and they mean business. Some unlock fairly relatively early on, but that doesn’t mean you should rush in right away. Many will stick around for a long while until you’re ready — and you’ll need to be. They are much harder than standard enemies or bosses and are usually in areas you’ve already been through or hidden around the world.
It’s a good idea to keep an eye out for secret bosses or listen to any rumors NPCs are spreading, as these enemies often give rare items or even powerful equipment. Whether of not they’re also part of a side-quest, they’ll need to be defeated if you want a 100% completion in the Monster Manual.
The Devil’s Arms
These special weapons first appeared in Tales of Symphonia as a massive side quest. While they aren’t in every Tales game, they have appeared in many of the newer ones, including Arise. Finding these weapons isn’t easy, as players need to kick off a side-quest, then find them across the world either by defeating certain enemies or back-tracking to certain locations. By the time you find them all, it’s usually late in the game, and they may seem somewhat weak. However, each iteration has its own gimmick. It’s up to the players to decide how to use them, though at the very least, they’re important for earning the Item Collector title for finding everything.
Titles
Titles are essentially in-game achievements for each character on the team — but with a twist. Titles can be equipped and can offer stat bonuses or even change a character’s costume depending on the particular game. While many are simple to acquire — like getting a 30-hit combo — some are much more difficult. Players may need to complete a certain side-quest, get a specific Skit or even do something absurd like the starting weapon for the majority of the game. There are tons of titles for each character ranging from simple to challenging to achieve.
