For most of Superstore, Glenn and Dina were adversaries. In the final season, however, they actually managed to find success as co-managers.
Season 6 of Superstore was an absolute gamechanger for the series in several ways. Amy left St. Louis to become an executive in Los Angeles. The COVID-19 pandemic hit, forcing Cloud 9 to completely change how they did business. But there was also a lot of upheaval in the Store Manager position. In the end, Glenn and Dina became co-managers, and against all odds, the plan actually worked out extremely well.
Glenn and Dina worked together at Store #1217 in St. Louis for a long time. It was Glenn who hired Dina in the first place and he was also likely the one to promote her to Assistant Manager. These were both decisions that Glenn came to regret on some level. While Dina was a devoted and intelligent employee, she became a huge thorn in Glenn’s side over the years who constantly found ways to make his life more difficult.
Dina believed that Glenn was too weak to be the manager and did everything she could to undermine him. The perpetual battle for power was exhausting for both of them as well as the staff. Most managers would have just fired Dina, but Glenn never fired anyone. Several episodes showed how he avoided firing people or laying them off in any way possible. He just wasn’t built for it, which kind of proved Dina’s point.
Eventually, Glenn resigned as the manager and returned to being a floor worker. Amy took over as manager, continuing her habit of wearing nametags with the wrong name on them. But she threw everyone a curveball in Superstore Season 6 when she decided to take a position at the company’s corporate headquarters in Los Angeles. This left a vacuum that Cloud 9 filled with Glenn since he had experience. But when he ended up with COVID, Glenn had to stay home and get better.
This rollercoaster ride got even weirder when Dina stepped in while Glenn was away. She got used to being the manager and didn’t want to give up the position when Glenn returned. The strange part about their relationship was that they had sort of become friends while Glenn was a floor worker. That being said, their constantly shifting positions of power made it impossible for them to establish a solid relationship.
In Superstore Season 6, Episode 6, Glenn and Dina came up with a plan. They decided to be co-managers, an idea that never should have worked. And in the old days, it wouldn’t have. But they had learned to appreciate each other’s strengths since then. Dina was incapable of being empathetic and Glenn was incapable of being a hardass. Together, this duo actually ended up being a nearly perfect manager, something no one saw coming. It didn’t last long, though.
Every physical Cloud 9 location closed a few episodes later, causing some even bigger changes in everyone’s lives. While Glenn and Dina didn’t work together anymore, they found a level of cooperation in those final days at Cloud 9 they hadn’t experienced in the rest of their careers together. And after Glenn and Dina went their separate ways professionally, they were finally able to become real friends for the first time.
