Jon Kent’s latest team-up could help set the stage for a future incarnation of the Justice League — which the world will likely be needing soon.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #8, now on sale from DC Comics
The DC Universe currently has a surplus of young heroes, set up to protect the world even if their mentors fall in the line of duty. With future storylines in Justice League even focusing on such an emergency, it’s important that some of these younger heroes are forming bonds that the world might soon be reliant on.
Superman: Son of Kal-El #8 by Tom Taylor, Cian Tormey, Raul Fernandez, Federico Blee, and Dave Sharpe largely focuses on a team-up between Jon Kent and Jackson Hyde. Considering the coming events set to define the future of the DC Universe, this pair becoming friends could be a huge step towards a new potential Justice League roster.
Superman: Son of Kal-El #8 focuses largely on Jon Kent’s attempts to help stop a Leviathan from reaching Metropolis. Although the public has a muted response to his efforts due to the damages caused by the Leviathan, Jon is ultimately able to help send the creature back into the ocean while also mitigating the potential disaster. This is largely thanks to the assistance of Jackson Hyde, who quickly works alongside Superman to help save the day. The former sidekick to Aquaman — and the heir apparent to that role going forward — Jackson’s powers are crucial in stopping the Leviathan from reaching Metropolis and wiping the city out.
Notably, Jackson also displays an easy friendship with Jon, the pair working well together under pressure. After the battle, Aquaman and Jackson both invite Jon to visit Atlantis — which is a far cry from Aquaman’s confrontation with Superman just months earlier, where the pair almost came to blows over an alien artifact. And yet, Aquaman greets and thanks Jon earnestly for his help, and seems to agree with Jackson that Jon is a friend to Atlantis and the world at large. On top of helping soothe out the conflict between Atlantis and the surface world, Jon may have just made a crucial ally ahead of some seriously dark times. The upcoming Justice League #75 is set to kill off almost all of the titular team, removing nine of the universe’s most important heroes from the field all at once.
In light of this loss, a new generation of heroes is going to be forced to step up. Leading that charge will likely be Jon Kent, who’s already accepted his role as the new Superman in his father’s absence while Kal-El and the Authority are on Warworld. Jon has also been steadily reaffirming his connections to other heroes — developing an easy rapport with Wally West and Dick Grayson while reaffirming his bond with Damian Wayne. Jon’s newfound friendship with Jackson could be another big development, as it would help keep the ocean’s likely new defender in the superheroic loop.
If this young generation end up forming their own Justice League, then Jackson makes perfect sense as a replacement for Aquaman. His friendship with Jon could help facilitate any partnership going forward, and would likely help expand the roster of heroes rising up in light of the League’s apparent demise. It’s also just promising to see the younger generation of heroes creating friendships — especially in light of the largely disconnected vibe of the potential Justice League from Future State. With heroes like Jackson at his side, Jon might be able to help truly protect the universe in light of his father’s expected upcoming demise.
