Superman’s New Sister Goes Full Injustice

[ad_1]

In Dark Knights of Steel #2, Zala Jor-El committed a violent crime that took readers by surprise. Next issue, she continues to use her brutal methods.

Dark Knights of Steel is turning DC’s new Supergirl into another evil Kryptonian.

At the end of the series’ second issue, Zala Jor-El — sister to Kal-El (Superman) — claimed retribution against King Jefferson (Black Lightning) for the death of her father and killed Jefferson’s son by flying him way up into the night sky, dropping him and letting gravity do the rest. In Dark Knights of Steel #3, Zala does not appear to be done with her murderous acts and turns her attention to this DC Universe’s Metal Men, with a preview showing her kill one of their members. The violent demeanor of this Supergirl has been something that writer Tom Taylor has toyed with before during his tenure working on Injustice.

Taylor has penned Elseworld stories for DC before the current medieval epic, such as DCeased and related series, but Injustice is the Elseworld universe that the creator has had the highest issue count in compared to the rest. Taylor contributed to titles like Injustice: Gods Among UsInjustice 2 and Injustice: Year Zero, serving as the predominant writer besides Brian Buccellato. The comics expanded on the video games of the same name, where Superman has become an evil dictator following the death of his wife and unborn son by the Joker’s hand.

Zala’s wicked turn and killing of the Metal Men and Jacob Jefferson echoes the actions of Injustice‘s Superman, who murdered numerous villains and the child Billy Batson aka Shazam for speaking out against him. This version of Superman also managed to bring the entire Earth under his rule, with the preview indicating that Zala seeks to claim more land for the Kingdom of Jor-El, being that she makes a statement about “Magnus Lands” soon falling under new ownership. The line is also a subtle reference to the Metal Men’s creator in comics, William Magnus, who first appeared alongside the team in Showcase #37.

The preview also reveals that a kryptonite meteorite has landed on Earth, which serves as a clear threat to the royal Jor-El family, being that this is the rock that can kill them and other Kryptonians aside from the power of the “Green Man,” who helped Green Arrow murder King Jor-El at the end of the series’ first issue.
