The first issue had already seen Jon interacting with Superman and other titles’ characters, such as Damian Wayne’s Robin who is Jon’s best friend. It is unknown what role this new character will play in Jon’s life as the new Man of Steel, but first appearances can be very important for collectors and readers alike.

Taking a look at the monetary side of things, let’s jump all the way back to Action Comics #1 from 1938, which debuted Superman for the very first time. This was the character’s first appearance and nearly 80 years later, the value has risen to incredible heights for the issue. A high-grade copy sold for a record-setting $3.25 million this year in 2021.
After all, the first appearance of a character can change the world of comics or fade into obscurity down the line, which dictates the issue’s value later on. Characters like Superman and Batman have become so ingrained into pop culture that their first appearances are always going to be extremely valued. However, a minor supporting character’s first appearance from the 90s may not reach the fame and value heights as these giants.
However, the introduction of this new character into Taylor’s book also has implications of where the story may go. Batman writer James Tynion IV has introduced a plethora of new and original characters into the world of the caped crusader since his tenure on the book began, including the likes of Punchline (Joker’s new girlfriend and Harley Quinn replacement), Ghostmaker and others. These characters have all shaped recent arcs and issues in new ways that hadn’t been previously seen, such as Punchline’s involvement in Joker War and manipulation of others in her own one-shot and Joker back-up stories.
For Jon Kent, he will already have the support of his mother, Lois Lane, and Taylor has previously teased more “Super Sons” stories with Jon and Damian. This new character could fulfill a role not previously seen with any of Jon’s stories. Fans will have to pick up the issue to find out what impact this new character may have on the world of Superman.
Superman: Son of Kal-El #2 goes on sale Aug. 24 from DC Comics. The issue will be written by Taylor with pencils and cover art by John Timms. Variant covers for the issue will be created by Sami Basri and In-Hyuk Lee.
