Superman vs Lobo Just Sent the Indestructible Bounty Hunter to Krypton

In Superman vs. Lobo, one of DC’s most chaotic heroes ends up in the highly structured society of a reborn Krypton, and the Man of Steel is left out.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman Vs. Lobo #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

The newest offering from DC Black Label pits the Man of Steel against the Main Man, Lobo. Tim Seeley, Sarah Beattie, Mirka Andolfo, Arif Prianto and Fabio Amelia’s Superman Vs. Lobo #1 takes two of DC’s most powerful characters from the streets of Metropolis to the depths of outer space and back again before transporting Superman and Lobo to each other’s home planets.

But much to their surprise, Superman finds himself on Czarnia and Lobo, the cosmic outlaw lands in the heart of a newly restored, rigidly structured Krypton.

At the beginning of Superman Vs. Lobo #1, Superman responds to a distress call from an interstellar vacation planet that is being terrorized by a gigantic interdimensional water bear named Numen, who has accidentally teleported to the planet and wreaking havoc in a disoriented panic. To make matters worse, Lobo is already on the scene fuming with rage after having his restful getaway interrupted by the colossal tardigrade. While Superman attempts to reason with the distressed creature, Lobo attacks it with ruthless aggression. Numen quickly flees the planet in pain, leaving the Man of Steel and the intergalactic bounty hunter to settle their own differences.

Despite the contentious nature of their confrontation, Numen doesn’t harbor any ill will towards either Superman or Lobo. In fact, the creature tracks the two super-powered brawlers down back on Earth and appears to them as a much calmer and smaller water bear. It explains that Superman’s empathy and Lobo’s prodding were just what it needed to come to its senses. Numen is grateful to them for what it perceived as exceedingly helpful behavior on both their parts. In addition to its gratitude, Numen also recognizes that like itself, Lobo and Superman are the last of their species. And to thank them both, Numen uses its incredible powers to restore both of their homeworlds and transport them back to their planets of origin.

Unfortunately, the tardigrade mixed up a few important details before transporting the heroes to their recreated worlds. Numen thought that Lobo was the last living Kryptonian and that Superman was the last son of Czarnia, so now the two heroes are heading to the wrong planets. Of course, the restoration of both planets is good news for innumerable beings, but it is hard to imagine the Kryptonians being particularly happy to see Lobo.

The Kryptonians have a reputation for being serious intellectuals who comport themselves in an orderly and formal manner. In other words, they are the opposite of Lobo, the rudest, crudest and baddest man alive. While Superman Vs. Lobo #1 makes it clear that Lobo can be as inventive and intelligent as Superman, he is clearly more concerned with more hedonistic, self-serving pursuits than the average Kryptonian citizen. However, it isn’t all bad news for Lobo. After all,h eloves breaking rules, and Krypton has no shortage of those.

It is hard to imagine that Superman will feel any more at home on the violent planet Czarnia, but he is more likely to be a gracious guest in a strange land than Lobo, who seems set to welcome Krypton back to existence with a temper tantrum of galactic proportions. Their interaction with Numen and the ensuing homeworld mix-up is a reminder of just how much Superman and Lobo have in common, and how remarkably incompatible they are. Two other figures might be able to use this as an opportunity to join forces and protect their newly regained planets of origin, but as it is, this situation will almost definitely fan the flames of Superman and Lobo’s rivalry.
